Chapter 10 - The Last Inheritance

The spring air was crisp and clear as the black Caruso sedan pulled up to the curb outside the private academy in downtown Chicago.
Vincent sat in the rear seat, wearing his signature beige three-piece suit. Beside him sat little Clara, wearing a neat navy blue dress and holding her repaired stuffed rabbit. Her hair was neatly combed, and a bright smile lit up her rosy cheeks as she watched the school gates open.
Luca and Nico came running down the concrete steps, their backpacks bouncing against their shoulders. They opened the car door and slid into the leather seats beside Clara, laughing and showing her their golden tournament ribbons.
"Uncle Vincent! We won three-zero!" Nico cheered, holding up his shiny blue ribbon.
"Nico scored the final goal from twenty yards out," Luca added proudly, clapping his younger brother on the back.
Vincent smiled, reaching out his broad hand to ruffle both of their brown heads. "That deserves ice cream from the parlor on Michigan Avenue."
"Yeah!" all three children cheered in unison.
As Marcus pulled the heavy sedan smoothly into the Chicago traffic, Vincent looked out the window at the towering skyscrapers reflecting the afternoon sun. The city was calm. The threats to his family had been neutralized, the betrayals exposed, and his home restored to peace.
He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against the cold silver casing of Michael’s watch.
He pulled it out, flicking the silver cover open to check the time.
Suddenly, Vincent noticed a microscopic seam along the inner bezel of the watch face that he had never noticed before.
Using the edge of his thumbnail, Vincent gently pressed the tiny ridge.
The inner watch face popped open on a miniature hinge, revealing a hollow compartment beneath the ticking gears.
Nested inside the tiny space was a silver micro-drive no larger than a fingernail, etched with a single capital letter: M.
Vincent stared at the micro-drive, his heart giving a subtle, heavy thud against his ribs.
His personal phone, resting on the leather armrest beside him, chimed with a quiet notification.
An encrypted text message from an unregistered satellite number flashed across the glass screen:
Michael was only the second in command, little brother. The real Don is waiting for you in New York. - M.
Vincent stared at the screen for three long seconds. He slowly looked up into the rearview mirror, meeting Marcus Hale’s watchful eyes.
Vincent didn't panic. He didn't raise his voice.
He quietly slid the micro-drive into his suit pocket, closed the watch casing with a sharp, decisive click, and looked down at the three laughing children sitting beside him.
"Marcus," Vincent said, his voice calm, steady, and filled with unbroken power.
"Yeah, boss?"

"After ice cream... clear my schedule for tomorrow morning. We’re taking the private jet to New York."
Vincent looked out at the open road ahead, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips as the sun set over the city.
