Chapter 5 - The Voice from Fifteen Years Ago

"You always were too sentimental, Vincent," Michael said, his voice sounding like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete.
The light from the storm outside flickered through the broken window, illuminating Michael’s face. The right side of his features was heavily scarred from thermal burns, his right eye a milky white, but his left blue-gray eye burned with the exact same lethal intensity as Vincent’s own.
Vincent stood inside the heavy steel cage, his gun aimed through the iron bars directly at his older brother's chest. "Let the boys go, Michael. This is between you and me."
Michael let out a raspy, bitter laugh. "Between you and me? You took my life, little brother! You sat in our father’s chair, drank his wine, drove his cars, and ran his syndicate while I rotted in private clinics across Europe, undergoing thirty-two reconstructive surgeries!"
"I didn't set that fire, Michael!" Vincent roared, his knuckles turning white on the grip of his pistol. "Father told me the Moretti family ambushed your dock warehouse! I spent five years hunting down every Moretti soldier responsible!"
"Father lied to you," Elena interjected, her voice cold and trembling as she held the gun over Luca’s head. "Our father planned the ambush himself, Vincent. Michael was getting too powerful, making unauthorized deals with the Russians. Father knew Michael would destroy the family business, so he chose you to replace him."
Vincent stared at his sister in utter disbelief. "And you knew? You let me believe our brother was dead for fifteen years?"
"I survived!" Elena snapped, tears finally glistening in her eyes. "I kept Michael alive in secret, waiting for the day he could come back and reclaim what was his. But then Michael went too far. He took Clara away from her mother. He became a monster!"
"Shut up, Elena!" Michael barked, stepping forward and seizing the revolver from her hand. He pointed the barrel directly at Vincent’s forehead through the steel bars. "Where is my daughter, Vincent? Where is Clara?"
Outside the cabin, the sound of breaking glass echoed from the rear porch.
Marcus Hale, who had escaped the trap by dropping low near the kitchen counter during the cage deployment, kicked open the side door. He fired three rapid shots into the wooden ceiling, creating a blinding cloud of drywall dust and splinters.
"Move!" Marcus yelled.
In the chaos, Vincent reached through the iron bars, grabbed the steel locking mechanism, and pulled with all his strength. His broad shoulders strained against the metal hinges until the worn latch snapped under the pressure.
He burst out of the cage, tackling Michael across the room. The revolver clattered across the floorboards, spinning into the dark corner near the fireplace.
Elena screamed, grabbing Luca and Nico by their arms and pulling them toward the front door. "Run! Get to the woods!"
"Elena, stop!" Vincent shouted as he wrestled Michael against the heavy timber wall.
Suddenly, a loud metallic click echoed through the room.
The front doors of the cabin were kicked inward, slamming against the walls. Four men dressed in tactical black gear with dark night-vision goggles stepped into the room, their submachine guns raised.

Standing behind them in the doorway was Dr. Adrian Cole, holding a small digital detonator.
"Drop your weapons," Dr. Cole said smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "All of you."
