Chapter 9

The result took nine days.
During those nine days, Maya and Thomas investigated the trust history.
Three pieces became crucial.
First, Margaret had paid the fertility clinic personally during the year Daniel was conceived.
Second, she had fought Daniel’s genetic verification twice—once medically and once through the trust.
Third, she had delayed Sophie’s beneficiary enrollment every year since Richard’s death.
The pattern was too consistent to dismiss.
Then the fertility clinic produced archived records.
Not because Claire sued.
Because Daniel signed his own release.
The files were incomplete.
Paper records.
Microfilm.
Old billing codes.
One notation mattered.
Donor cycle completed.
Daniel stared.
“Donor.”
Thomas nodded.
Another page listed:
Male-factor infertility — severe.
Patient listed:
Richard Ellison.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father had been unlikely to conceive biologically.
Not impossible.
But unlikely.
Then they found a consent form signed by Margaret.
It authorized donor insemination.
Richard’s signature line was blank.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Did he know?”
“We can’t tell from this.”
That distinction mattered.
A later note suggested Richard knew “assisted reproduction had been successful.”
It did not specify whether he knew a donor had been used.
Margaret’s secrecy might have been from Richard too.
That possibility changed Daniel’s anger.
Not softened.
Changed.
The laboratory called the next morning.
The lineage report was complete.
Daniel asked that Claire be present.
They met at Maya’s office.
Sophie was with Claire’s sister.
No child needed to be in a room where adults decided what genetics meant to them.
The envelope arrived by courier.
Not the same envelope from the birthday.
A new one.
Daniel stared at it.
Claire noticed his hand shaking.
“You don’t have to open it alone.”
He looked at her.
For a second there was still a marriage between them.
Then the memory of his slap entered the room.
The distance returned.
Maya opened the report.
Her eyes moved across the page.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Claire.
“Sophie is biologically Daniel’s daughter.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“We knew that.”
“Yes.”
Maya continued.
“And Daniel is not genetically consistent with being Richard Ellison’s biological son.”
Silence.
Daniel looked down.
The result everyone expected had arrived.
But the real twist had not.
That came from the trust records Maya placed beside it.
May you like
Because Margaret’s secret was not merely about Daniel’s conception.
She had used the secret financially for decades.
