Chapter 6

The hotel accident itself came back under review.

Not because anyone believed Loretta had caused Isolde’s original fall.

She had not.

The maintenance problem predated the family scheme.

But discovery in Isolde’s civil case had reached something larger than one loose handrail.

The decorative rail system came from a specialty architectural supplier used during renovations at seven Corsetti Hospitality properties.

After Isolde’s accident, an engineering consultant examined the failed anchor.

His confidential preliminary memo said:

Installation method may not meet manufacturer embedment specifications at multiple locations. Recommend portfolio-wide inspection where same bracket system installed.

Corsetti Grand inspected its own mezzanine.

Several anchors required replacement.

The company did not immediately inspect every other property.

Why?

Claudia approved a narrower risk recommendation.

Her memo said:

No evidence of systemic failure outside Grand. Expand only if additional incident or insurer requires.

That decision might have been defensible at the time.

The consultant disagreed.

He sent a follow-up:

Absence of reported incident does not confirm proper installation.

Loretta was copied.

No broader inspection followed.

Then Isolde’s lawyer obtained the memo in discovery.

He asked for maintenance and installation records from the other six properties.

Corsetti Hospitality objected that the request was overbroad.

A judge had not yet ruled.

Meridian Lodging’s buyer counsel learned of the dispute during diligence.

Its reaction was predictable.

If the same potentially defective system existed elsewhere in the Corsetti portfolio, the buyer wanted to know whether the problem could create additional claims or insurance issues.

Most of those other properties were not part of the Meridian transaction.

But Corsetti Hospitality’s lender and umbrella insurer cared.

One insurer wrote:

Pending broader engineering review, renewal terms may require additional premises-safety reserve.

That was the pressure Loretta did not want public before closing.

Now the room manipulation had a second purpose.

A smaller, quickly settled Isolde claim could end discovery before the court decided whether her lawyers were entitled to the portfolio-wide installation records.

The moment the claim settled, Isolde’s side would no longer be pursuing those requests.

That did not erase regulatory or insurer obligations.

It did remove one aggressive civil litigant with direct standing and motivated counsel.

Valentino read the engineering memo.

“When did you see this?”

Claudia answered through her lawyer:

“Last year.”

“Did you tell me there might be seven properties?”

“I told the board Grand needed inspection.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Claudia looked down.

“No.”

Loretta interrupted.

“You are pretending every maintenance note deserves your attention.”

Valentino turned toward her.

“My daughter fell because one of those notes didn’t get enough attention.”

Loretta’s face hardened.

“Your daughter recovered.”

Valentino looked at Isolde’s replacement brace resting on the chair beside him.

“No.”

May you like

He said it quietly.

“She adapted.”
