Chapter 5

Corinne denied knowing anything about a plan to hurt Marcellus.

Her lawyer arranged one voluntary interview before advising silence.

“Your mother lifted the baby over the fire pit. Why did you block Lissette?”

“I thought Lissette was going to crash into Mom.”

“Why?”

“She was running.”

“Toward her infant.”

“Yes.”

“Why not move aside?”

“I panicked.”

The detective showed her the video.

Corinne moved sideways before Lissette reached the narrow passage.

Not after contact.

Not because she was knocked.

She saw her sister coming and deliberately occupied the space.

“Still panic?”

“Yes.”

Then Donovan asked:

“What did your mother mean when she said you deserved the first grandchild?”

Corinne started crying.

“My mother is obsessed with fairness.”

“What fairness?”

“I lost babies.”

“That does not answer the question.”

Corinne looked away.

“My grandfather’s trust changes when there’s a grandchild.”

“Did you know that?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Marcellus needed to survive sixty days?”

Long pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you know your loan deadline was one day before that?”

“My mother handles the family side.”

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

Corinne’s lawyer ended the interview.

Then forensic analysts examined guests’ phones.

One woman had recorded eight minutes continuously because she was filming the gift table for a social-media montage she never posted.

Audio captured a conversation near the patio door twenty-two minutes before the attack.

Theodora:

“Stay close when I hold him.”

Corinne:

“Why?”

“Because Lissette hovers.”

“I don’t want another fight.”

“You want Crownwell?”

“Mom.”

“You want Crownwell?”

Silence.

Then Corinne:

“Yes.”

Theodora:

“Then stop behaving like everything can remain comfortable.”

Not enough to prove she knew the specific act.

Enough to make the blocking harder to call random.

Another guest’s video captured Theodora taking Marcellus from Lissette earlier.

Lissette hesitated.

Theodora smiled brightly.

“Let Grandma have two minutes.”

Corinne stood beside them.

The baby remained safe.

Then Theodora carried him toward the fire pit.

Lissette followed.

Corinne followed.

Theodora said:

“Stop treating me like I’m dangerous.”

Lissette answered:

“Then step away from the fire.”

Theodora did not.

The gathering’s noise covered the next few seconds.

Then the famous sentence:

“Your sister deserved the first grandchild. Not you.”

Detective Donovan paused the recording.

Theodora’s voice was not frantic.

Not confused.

Cold.

Then Lissette began moving.

Corinne blocked.

Theodora released Marcellus.

Anselm caught him.

Afterward Theodora told police she had stumbled while Lissette rushed her.

Every surviving video contradicted that.

There was no stumble.

Then investigators found a search on Theodora’s tablet from five days earlier:

family trust survival clause first descendant dies before vesting

Another:

what constitutes surviving 60 days trust beneficiary

Her attorney argued that she administered the trust.

She had legitimate reasons to research.

True.

Then came a third search:
