Chapter 9

The patio attack was reconstructed second by second.

1:48 p.m.

Theodora asks the caterer to turn the fire pit on despite the warm afternoon.

The caterer questions it.

She says evening guests will use the patio later.

1:56.

Theodora moves the chair that normally narrows access beside the pit.

2:17.

Corinne arrives.

2:21.

Theodora texts:

Remember what I asked.

Corinne replies:

I hate this.

Theodora:

Five seconds.

2:43.

Lissette arrives carrying Marcellus.

3:06.

Several guests gather for photographs.

3:11.

Theodora asks to hold him.

3:12:14.

She carries him toward the fire pit.

3:12:20.

Lissette follows.

3:12:23.

Theodora says:

“Your sister deserved the first grandchild. Not you.”

3:12:25.

Lissette moves forward.

3:12:26.

Corinne blocks the narrow passage.

3:12:27.

Theodora releases Marcellus.

3:12:27.

Anselm dives.

Less than one second separated release and catch.

Theodora later told police she lost her grip when Lissette lunged.

The video showed Lissette never touched her.

Corinne never touched Theodora either.

Then investigators found something more disturbing in the fire-pit records.

The unit normally used a removable mesh safety screen when young children attended.

The caterer had placed it over the pit that morning.

At 1:51, Theodora told staff to remove it because:

“It looks ugly in photographs.”

One staff member objected.

Theodora insisted.

Security footage confirmed removal.

Her lawyer argued people removed decorative screens all the time.

True.

The timing remained relevant.

Then trust counsel turned over one final email.

Sent by Theodora nine days before the party.

Hypothetical: If the first qualifying descendant is born alive but fails the 60-day survival condition, does the later birth of another descendant become the new measuring event?

Howard Bell replied:

Yes. The trust remains under existing structure until a great-grandchild satisfies the full condition. Why?

Theodora:

Estate-planning housekeeping.

Howard:

There is no need to do anything now. Marcellus appears healthy and will qualify automatically on August 18.

Theodora never answered.

August 18.

Day sixty.

The date was also circled in red on a paper calendar recovered from her family-office desk.

Next to it:

HNB

Harrington National Bank.

The next line:

Audit.

Then, one day earlier:

GRAYMONT FINAL.

The sequence was explicit.

Anselm stared at the calendar.

For the first time, he allowed himself to say the sentence he had been refusing.

“She needed him not to reach August eighteenth.”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“That is what prosecutors will argue.”

Lissette heard.

She looked down at her sleeping son.

Theodora had spent weeks calling him an accident of timing.

Now timing looked like the entire point.
