Chapter 1

Dominic did not touch Geneva.
That frightened the room more than violence would have.
The ballroom was frozen under golden Christmas lights, with broken ribbon at Elsie’s feet and ash dust rising from the fireplace hearth where Geneva’s luxury gifts had landed.
The fire was not lit.
That was the only reason the scene did not become another emergency.
Dominic held the small key between two fingers.
Geneva stared at it as if it were a weapon.
Elsie hid behind his tuxedo jacket, still crying.
Detective Mara Holt arrived twenty minutes later because Dominic called police himself.
That shocked everyone.
A Mafia boss inviting officers into his Christmas Eve party.
Geneva’s first statement was that Elsie had ruined the party by “making a scene.”
Her second was that Dominic had destroyed her property.
Her third was that the key belonged to no one.
Mara asked:
“Then why did you threaten a child over it?”
Geneva’s mouth tightened.
Dominic gave the key to Mara in an evidence envelope.
He also gave her the damaged gift box.
The tag was still readable under crushed foil paper.
For Elsie, Christmas age seven. Love, Mommy.
Elsie’s mother, Clara Belloro, had disappeared three years earlier.
The official family story was simple.
Clara had abandoned Dominic and Elsie because she could not bear life inside the Belloro family.
Dominic had never fully believed it.
But he had lived as if it might be true because the alternative was unbearable.
Now a gift supposedly wrapped before Clara disappeared contained a key Geneva desperately wanted destroyed.
Mara turned to Dominic.
“Where did this present come from?”
Dominic answered:
“Clara left a trunk of Christmas gifts for Elsie.”
“How many?”
“Five.”
“Who controlled the trunk?”
Dominic looked at Geneva.
“My sister-in-law handled the household inventory after Clara vanished.”
Geneva said sharply:
“I preserved Clara’s things when he wouldn’t even go near the room.”
Dominic looked at the crushed gift.
“You preserved what helped your story.”
Elsie whispered:
“Daddy, was Mommy coming back?”
No one answered.
That became the central question.

Not only where Clara went.
Whether every Christmas Elsie had spent believing her mother left her had been built from someone else’s lie.
