Chapter 4

Clara had entered protective relocation.
Not full fantasy witness protection with a new identity and movie rules.
A real, limited, court-supervised and federally assisted protection arrangement connected to an ongoing racketeering and financial investigation.
She had become a cooperating witness after discovering that the Belloro Christmas Foundation was not merely overpaying vendors.
Some vendors were tied to illegal cash movement.
Some charitable funds were being advanced and replaced late, making donations look intact during annual reports.
Some toy-drive invoices hid payments to companies controlled by Geneva.
Clara took records to Helen Price first.
Helen told her:
“You are married to the man whose family this touches.”
Clara answered:
“I know.”
“Are you accusing Dominic?”
Clara cried then.
“Not of this. But his world makes all of it possible.”
That distinction became important.
Clara had evidence against Geneva.
Evidence against foundation vendors.
Evidence touching Belloro companies.
And information that could expose Dominic’s criminal network even if he had not personally ordered Geneva’s charity scheme.
Then Clara received threats.
Not dramatic notes cut from magazines.
Subtle ones.
A car idling outside Elsie’s preschool.
A nanny followed.
A photograph of Elsie’s bedroom window mailed with no return address.
Clara tried to leave with Elsie through family court.
Before the emergency petition could be heard, one of Dominic’s men learned she had contacted outside counsel.
That man reported it to Geneva, not Dominic.
Geneva told Clara:
“If you drag Elsie into court, Dominic will hear you tried to steal his daughter.”
Clara did not believe Dominic would harm Elsie.
She did believe his world would erupt before law could protect anyone.
So investigators moved Clara first while building enough support for a safe custody approach.
Then everything stalled.
Not because Clara stopped trying.
Because Geneva intercepted the communication channel that should have reached Dominic and Elsie.
The Christmas gifts were not goodbye presents.
They were proof of continued presence.
May you like
Proof that Clara had not vanished emotionally or legally.
Geneva had buried them one holiday at a time.
