Chapter 10 - The threshold of the velvet empire

A week later, the cinematic brilliance of the estate had been completely restored. The shattered glass was gone, the marble floors were polished to a mirror finish, and the staff moved with a renewed, almost reverent energy.
Clara sat at the head of the massive mahogany table in the banquet hall. She was not clearing plates. She was sitting in the heavily carved antique chair, leaning back against the crest that belonged to her family. She wore a sharp, tailored white suit, projecting a modern, sophisticated authority that perfectly matched the grand room.
Dominic stood near the window, dressed in his custom charcoal suit, watching the perimeter of the estate. The sunlight caught the rugged lines of his jaw. He was no longer the supreme boss of the syndicate on paper, but he was the weapon Clara wielded to maintain control.
“The accounts have been fully transferred, Miss Bennett,” Marcus, the new syndicate lawyer, said, sliding a thick leather folder across the table. “Fifty billion dollars in clean real estate, international shipping, and private banking are now legally in your name.”
Clara signed the final document with a sleek gold pen, her fair skin glowing under the warm chandeliers. She closed the folder.
“Thank you, Marcus. Ensure the families are compensated for the disruption last week. I want absolute peace in the city,” Clara ordered, her American accent smooth and commanding.
The lawyer bowed and left the room.
Clara looked over at Dominic. The chemistry between them was a heavy, unspoken tension that filled the massive room. They had spent the last week dismantling Celeste’s remaining loyalists and restructuring the entire underworld empire.
“You look like you belong in that chair,” Dominic said, walking slowly toward her, his hands in his pockets.
Clara smiled, a genuinely beautiful, confident smile. “I’m still getting used to people not handing me a mop when I walk into a room.”
Dominic reached the table, leaning over it, his face inches from hers. The scent of expensive cologne and dangerous masculinity washed over her. “No one will ever hand you a mop again, Clara. You are the queen of this city. And I am exactly where I want to be.”
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. Clara leaned slightly into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a fraction of a second, reveling in the safety and power this man provided.
Suddenly, the sharp, shrill ring of the secure syndicate landline echoed through the quiet banquet hall.
It was the red phone in the center of the table, a line that only rang when there was an absolute emergency from the high council.
Dominic’s expression hardened instantly. He pulled his hand away and picked up the receiver, holding it to his ear.
“Speak,” Dominic commanded.
For a long moment, he listened. The rugged composure of the mafia boss remained intact, but a dark, violent shadow crossed his dark eyes. Without a word, he slowly placed the receiver back onto the cradle.
Clara sat forward, the heavy responsibility of her new crown settling onto her shoulders. “What is it, Dominic?”
Dominic looked down at her, the cinematic light casting deep shadows across his face. The peace they had won was fragile, built on decades of blood.
“Celeste didn't just leave town,” Dominic said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. “Before we banished her, she made one last phone call. She contacted the rival families on the east coast. She told them the Carvelli empire is being run by a maid. They have crossed the city limits, Clara. They are coming for the throne.”

Clara did not panic. She did not tremble. She looked at the carved crest on her chair, then up at the immensely powerful man standing by her side. She had survived a lifetime of poverty, the cruelty of the elite, and a night of fire and blood. She was a Bennett, and she was finally home.
“Let them come,” Clara said softly, her blue eyes flashing with a dangerous, beautiful fire. “We will show them exactly whose house they are trying to break into.”
