Chapter 6 - The grand masquerade

The ballroom of the estate was transformed into a blindingly bright cinematic paradise. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over the hundreds of elite guests, crime bosses, politicians, and high-society socialites. The room hummed with the dangerous, quiet energy of immense power. Men in tailored tuxedos and women in haute couture gowns mingled, sipping champagne, completely unaware of the dead lawyer lying in the locked study down the hall.

Celeste Carvelli descended the grand staircase like a conquering queen. She had changed into a breathtaking, blood-red evening gown that contrasted sharply with her fair skin. She moved with ruthless confidence, greeting the syndicate elders, whispering poisoned words into their ears, solidifying her narrative that Dominic had lost his mind.

Dominic stood near the grand fireplace, a glass of bourbon in his hand. His custom charcoal tuxedo projected absolute authority, but his dark eyes were scanning the room, calculating every threat. He knew Celeste had poisoned the lawyer. He knew her cleanup crew was likely circling the estate. But he also knew that in their world, power was not taken by force; it was taken by perception.

The heavy double doors at the top of the grand staircase suddenly opened. The murmurs in the ballroom slowly died away, rippling into complete, stunning silence.

Clara Bennett stood at the top of the stairs.

She did not look like a maid. She wore a masterfully tailored, sweeping midnight-blue silk gown that fit her perfectly. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant, classic style. But it was the jewelry that caught the light and stopped the breath of every older man in the room. Resting against her fair collarbone was the magnificent diamond and sapphire teardrop necklace.

She walked down the stairs slowly, gracefully, her flats replaced by elegant heels. Every eye in the room was fixed on her.

Dominic walked to the bottom of the stairs and offered her his hand. Clara took it, her fingers trembling slightly, but Dominic’s firm, warm grip anchored her.

“You look perfect,” he murmured, his voice a low, reassuring rumble meant only for her.

They walked into the center of the ballroom. Celeste watched them, her beautiful face contorting with absolute fury. She marched toward the oldest, most powerful syndicate elder, a man named Don Alighieri.

“Look at this insult,” Celeste hissed to the old man. “He dresses a servant in family jewels and parades her in front of you. He is disrespecting the council.”

Don Alighieri did not answer Celeste. His aged, sharp eyes were locked onto Clara’s face, and more specifically, the sapphire resting on her chest. He slowly stepped away from Celeste and walked toward Dominic and Clara.

The entire ballroom held its breath.

Don Alighieri stopped in front of Clara. He looked at her fair, rosy face, the exact mirror image of the portrait hidden in the walls. The old boss reached out a trembling hand, not to strike her, but to gently touch the edge of the sapphire.

“I have not seen this stone in fifty years,” Don Alighieri whispered, his voice carrying the weight of decades of secrets. He looked up into Clara’s blue eyes. “I was a young soldier when Evelyn Bennett wore this. Your father told us the Bennett bloodline was eradicated, Dominic. He told us he conquered the empire. But looking at her… he merely stole it.”

Celeste’s eyes widened in horror. The narrative she had built was crumbling in seconds. The elders were not angry at Dominic; they were realizing the foundation of their entire syndicate was built on a stolen throne.

“It’s a trick!” Celeste shouted, her voice shrill, completely losing her sophisticated composure. “She’s a fraud! Dominic hired her to steal my inheritance!”

Don Alighieri turned to Celeste, his expression turning to stone. “Your inheritance, Celeste? Or the inheritance you murdered your husband to keep hidden?”
