Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

Damian Russo walked through the wrought-iron garden gate. The man was a myth draped in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, his black shirt unbuttoned perfectly at the collar to reveal a silver chain. He was athletic, rugged, and deeply masculine, carrying a frighteningly calm aura that commanded absolute obedience. The luxury wristwatch on his arm caught the bright cinematic sunlight as he stepped onto the grass. He was supposed to be in a closed-door syndicate meeting in the city. He wasn't supposed to be here for another three hours.

His dark eyes swept the lawn and immediately locked onto the pony enclosure. He saw his daughter trembling on the grass, tears streaming down her fair cheeks. He saw the torn dress. And he saw Vivienne standing over her with a satisfied smile.

Damian didn't run. He didn't yell. He walked with a terrifying, rhythmic purpose. When he reached the enclosure, he stepped smoothly between Vivienne and Lily, immediately pulling his daughter behind his broad back protectively. He stood like a monolith of solid granite, his polished shoes planted firmly in the grass.

He didn't speak. He just looked down at Lily, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her rosy cheek.

Lily sniffled, her small hand clutching the remaining frayed fabric of her torn sash. She pointed a trembling finger toward Vivienne. “She said this party should have been hers.”

The silence that followed was deafening. The distant sound of a string quartet playing on the patio seemed to fade into nothing.

Damian turned his head slowly. He looked at Vivienne. Vivienne lifted her chin, her arrogant smile returning, ready to spin a lie about how the child had tripped, about how she was only trying to help. She opened her mouth to speak.

She never got the word out.

Damian walked straight toward Vivienne, his massive shoulders shifting smoothly under the charcoal wool. With blinding speed and devastating precision, he delivered a hard, open-handed slap straight across her face.

The impact cracked like a gunshot across the lawn. The force of the blow lifted Vivienne off her feet. She flew backward, crashing violently into a lavishly decorated, multi-tiered snack cart. The cart buckled under her weight, sending towering glass jars of colorful candy, expensive fruit trays, and delicate floral birthday decorations crashing and scattering across the pristine lawn.

Guests screamed. Security guards stepped forward, but a single, subtle raise of Damian’s left hand froze them perfectly in place.

Vivienne lay in the wreckage. Her luxurious ivory dress was stained with crushed strawberries and dirt. Her diamond bracelet was tangled in a broken candy jar. Slowly, trembling with a mixture of absolute shock and blistering rage, she got back to her feet. She held her reddened cheek. She was covered in dirt, her perfect image shattered, yet a venomous, unhinged smile crept across her face.

“Keep choosing that girl,” Vivienne hissed venomously, wiping a smear of dirt from her chin, “and you’ll lose your true heir.”

Damian stepped closer, the crunch of broken glass echoing under his polished shoes. His expression remained completely, terrifyingly cold.

“The inheritance has already been changed.”

Vivienne stared at him in utter shock, her venomous smile vanishing completely as the true weight of his words hit her like a freight train. And from the shadows of the terrace above, a man with a camera quietly lowered his lens, having captured the entire thing.
