Chapter 8 - The Cornered Snake

Vivienne ran blindly down the carpeted hallway of the museum's second floor, her expensive heels sinking into the plush fabric. She burst into a private exhibition room, slamming the heavy mahogany doors behind her and locking the deadbolt. She was trapped. There were no windows, only priceless paintings staring down at her.
She pulled out her phone, her hands shaking so violently she dropped it twice. She had to call her pilot. She had to get to the airstrip.
Before she could dial a single number, the lock on the heavy mahogany door clicked, turning effortlessly from the outside.
The doors pushed open slowly. Damian stepped into the room, silhouetted by the bright lights of the hallway. He closed the doors gently behind him, the latch clicking shut with an eerie finality.
Vivienne backed away, tripping over a velvet rope and falling hard onto the polished wooden floor. She looked up at him, her glamorous facade completely stripped away, leaving only raw, animalistic fear.
"Damian, please," she begged, her American accent losing all its polished arrogance, reverting to a desperate, shrill plea. "We are family. You can't do this to me. I'll leave the country. You'll never see me again."
Damian walked slowly toward her, his polished shoes echoing softly on the floor. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly sad. And that terrified her more than anything else.
"You came into my home," Damian said quietly. "You put your hands on my daughter. You threw her ribbon in the mud, and you pushed her down. You brought armed men to my door."
"I was desperate!" Vivienne cried, crawling backward. "She isn't even yours, Damian! She's nothing! She's just a stray you bought to make yourself look human! Why do you care so much about a child with no blood ties?"
Damian stopped walking. He stood directly over her, casting a long, dark shadow across the floor.
He looked down at Vivienne, his jaw tightening, a deeply buried pain flashing behind his cold eyes.
May you like
"You really don't know, do you?" Damian asked softly.
Vivienne stopped crawling. She looked up at him, breathless and confused. "Know what?"
