Chapter 1 - The Staircase at Midnight

The grand ballroom of the Ravelli estate burned with the golden glare of three massive Baccarat chandeliers. Outside, a brutal Christmas Eve blizzard whipped across the pine forests of upstate New York, but inside, the air was warm, heavy with the scent of roasted chestnuts, vintage champagne, and expensive French perfume. Hundreds of high-society figures, corrupt judges, and syndicate lieutenants milled across the polished marble floor, their laughter echoing beneath vaulted ceilings draped in velvet garland.
At fifty-two, Dominic Ravelli commanded the room without raising his voice. He stood near the grand archway, an imposing mountain of a man with broad shoulders, a battle-hardened frame, and rugged masculine features. Dressed in a custom midnight-black tuxedo, gold cufflinks, a luxury wristwatch, and hand-polished leather shoes, Dominic radiated a terrifying, unyielding calm. He took a slow sip of sparkling water, his piercing blue-gray eyes scanning every corner of the estate with watchful precision.
Near the top of the sweeping double staircase stood eighty-year-old Agatha Ravelli. The matriarch of the family was a vision of timeless dignity. Her silver hair was styled with flawless elegance, and she wore a burgundy formal blouse, dark tailored trousers, pearl earrings, a gold bracelet, and low heels. Though physically frail, her dark eyes remained as sharp as steel needles, observing the sea of guests below.
Stepping quietly behind her was forty-one-year-old Vivienne Ravelli, Dominic’s glamorous sister-in-law. Draped in an extravagant emerald Christmas gown that trailed along the carpet, Vivienne dripped with diamond earrings and a matching bracelet that caught the light with every subtle movement. Her fair rosy skin was taut with a sharp, calculating smile, but her eyes burned with pure malice.
As Agatha reached the fourth step from the top landing, resting her frail hand on the carved mahogany banister, Vivienne glided forward. With a swift, deliberate movement, Vivienne raised her emerald heel and kicked the back of Agatha’s knee.
Agatha gasped as her leg buckled beneath her. She lost her balance, tumbling forward down several carpeted steps.
Vivienne looked down at the falling matriarch, her lips curving into a vicious, mocking smile. "Consider retirement permanent," Vivienne whispered softly over the sound of the ballroom orchestra.
Dominic’s sharp eyes caught the fall instantly from the lower landing. Moving with explosive, terrifying speed, he charged up the first flight of stairs, extending his broad, muscular arms to catch his mother before she could tumble further. He pulled Agatha gently against his chest, wrapping his massive frame around her like a protective shield.
Agatha trembled violently against his tuxedo lapel, her fair rosy cheeks pale with shock. She clutched Dominic’s sleeve with surprisingly tight fingers, looking up at him with wide, frightened eyes.
"Dominic..." Agatha whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "She wants me gone before midnight."
Dominic’s jaw set like iron. He didn't speak. He gently handed his mother into the arms of Frank, his chief security lieutenant who had rushed up beside them.
Dominic turned around and stormed back up the staircase toward the upper landing. His heavy leather shoes clicked against the marble with lethal rhythm. The music in the ballroom died instantly as guests froze in stunned horror.
Vivienne stood her ground on the landing, forcing an arrogant, cold smile onto her face. "Dominic, darling, she simply slipped—"
CRACK!
Dominic brought his broad right palm across Vivienne’s face with devastating power. The open-handed slap sounded like a gunshot through the cavernous hall. The sheer force spun Vivienne completely sideways, sending her crashing onto the velvet carpet of the landing, her diamond earrings clicking loudly against the floor.
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Vivienne lay sprawled on the carpet, her emerald gown rumpled, her cheek rapidly swelling red. Yet, slowly, she pushed herself up onto her elbow. A bitter, venomous smile touched her lips through her rage.
"Protect her, and your father’s secret comes out," Vivienne hissed, her raspy voice carrying clearly through the silent hall.
Dominic took two slow steps closer, his tall frame looming over her like an executioner. Beside the stairs, Agatha’s face drained of all color, a look of pure terror taking over her eyes.
"What did my father hide?" Dominic asked, his voice ice-cold and steady.
Vivienne’s smile only grew wider.

"Ask your mother," Vivienne purred, "why the family vault in Geneva has your father's death certificate dated three years before you were born."
The entire ballroom plunged into a suffocating, dead silence.
