Chapter 14 - THE ROOM UNDER THE HOUSE

Maisie’s eighth birthday arrived under a clear June sky.
No ivory gowns.
No formal violinists.
No hundred-person guest list.
Dominic asked what she wanted.
“Pizza.”
Samuel nearly cried with relief.
The courtyard filled with children instead of executives.
Yellow balloons.
Water games.
A magician Daniel hired who was so bad he became entertaining.
Dominic wore no tie.
Daniel arrived late on the motorcycle.
Maisie immediately demanded a ride.
Dominic immediately said no.
Daniel whispered:
“Your house, your rules?”
Maisie corrected him.
“My house.”
Daniel laughed for almost a full minute.
After cake, Dominic led Maisie downstairs.
Only family came.
Daniel.
Rosa.
Samuel.
A few trusted friends.
The old steel door to Parcel 9 had been removed.
In its place stood wide glass panels.
Dominic switched on the lights.
Maisie gasped.
Bookshelves covered one wall.
Art tables filled another.
A small indoor climbing structure occupied the far corner.
Lockers contained craft supplies.
There were couches.
Computers.
A music area.
And a brass plaque:
THE ELENA FERRARO FAMILY ROOM.
Maisie stared.
“This was the scary room?”
“Yes.”
“Where Grandpa kept secrets?”
“Yes.”
She looked around.
“Now it has paint.”
Dominic smiled.
“Yes.”
“Can I put paint on the walls?”
He hesitated.
She grinned.
“It’s my house.”
Daniel almost fell over laughing.
Dominic sighed.
“Within reason.”
Maisie ran toward the art table.
Elena would have loved it.
That thought no longer destroyed Dominic.
It still hurt.
Different thing.
On one shelf stood a photograph of Elena holding newborn Maisie.
Beside it, Angelo Ferraro with Dominic and Daniel as boys.
Not erased.
Not worshiped.
Family history.
Complicated.
Human.
That evening, after the children left, Daniel and Dominic sat in the courtyard drinking coffee.
Daniel looked toward the mansion.
“You know what’s strange?”
“Your motorcycle?”
“Besides that.”
He smiled.
“We spent our whole lives thinking this place made us Ferraros.”
Dominic waited.
Daniel continued.
“Turns out it belongs to an eight-year-old.”
“Seven this morning.”
“Details.”
Dominic looked toward Maisie chasing fireflies.
Daniel became serious.
“You stepping away?”
“From what?”
“You know.”
The old organization.
Dominic looked at his brother.
“I’m stepping toward something.”
Daniel rolled his eyes.
“That sounds like a therapist wrote it.”
“Maisie’s therapist.”
“Ah.”
Dominic smiled.
Then:
“I’m done building anything that requires my daughter to inherit enemies.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s going to upset people.”
“People survive disappointment.”
“You always say that right before someone becomes extremely disappointed.”
Dominic laughed.
The sound surprised both of them.
A year earlier, laughter between the brothers had felt rare.
Now it felt possible again.
Samuel approached carrying an envelope.
“No return address.”
Dominic looked at him.
Daniel groaned.
“Can this family receive one normal piece of mail?”
Samuel handed it over.
Inside:
A small photograph.
Angelo Ferraro standing beside a woman Dominic did not recognize.
Date on back:
Underneath, handwritten:
PARCEL 9 WAS NOT THE ONLY ARCHIVE.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Dominic looked at the photograph.
Then folded it.
Samuel waited.
“What do you want to do?”
Dominic slipped it into his jacket.
“Tomorrow.”
Daniel turned.
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not launching a twelve-state investigation tonight?”
“No.”
Daniel looked impressed.
“Who are you?”
Dominic glanced toward Maisie.
She waved.
He waved back.
“Busy.”
The photograph remained an unanswered thread.
So did several old accounts investigators had not fully traced.
Marcus had mentioned offshore files no one found.
Thomas claimed Angelo once maintained another archive outside Illinois.
Maybe true.
Maybe another dead man’s rumor.
For once, Dominic did not let mystery steal the present.
He joined Maisie near the roses.
She handed him a firefly jar.
“Hold.”
He obeyed.
Five minutes later she released every firefly.
Dominic watched the lights scatter across the dark garden.
Once, his father collected information because keeping things made him feel safe.
May you like
Maisie caught beautiful things and let them go.
Dominic wondered which one of them understood power better.
