Chapter 9 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WINE CELLAR

Marcus Vale had not retired to Arizona.

At least, not permanently.

Security records from six months earlier showed an elderly man entering the estate through the service gate under the name Martin Vail.

The photograph was grainy.

But Daniel recognized him.

“So do I,” Dominic said.

Marcus had aged.

White hair.

Thinner face.

Same eyes.

The man who had drafted half the Ferraro family’s legal structures had been inside Dominic’s home without Dominic knowing.

Lenora sat in the library under the watch of her own attorney.

Her arrogance was fading.

Not enough to make Dominic trust her.

Enough to make him believe she had been used.

“What did Marcus want?” Daniel asked.

Lenora looked at him.

“To restore what your father intended.”

“Our father has been dead eight years.”

“He said Elena manipulated Dominic into moving family property outside the bloodline structure.”

Dominic stared.

“Maisie is my bloodline.”

“Marcus claimed there were questions.”

“The fake paternity report.”

Lenora looked away.

Daniel spoke.

“He gave you the laboratory document?”

Silence.

“Lenora.”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

She continued quickly.

“He said the report came from private records Elena kept.”

Dominic nearly laughed.

“You believed an eighty-year-old man who appeared from nowhere carrying secret DNA?”

“I believed your father distrusted Elena.”

That part might have been true.

Angelo Ferraro had never fully approved of Dominic marrying someone outside the family’s world.

He respected Elena.

He did not trust anyone he had not selected.

Lenora continued.

“Marcus said Angelo wanted the mansion preserved inside the Ferraro family trust.”

“Maisie is Ferraro family.”

“He said if paternity failed—”

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

“Stop saying that.”

Lenora flinched.

Daniel’s anger was different from Dominic’s.

Less frightening.

More personal.

“You spent weeks making a child wonder whether her dead mother lied to her because an old man promised you money?”

Lenora looked at him.

“Our company was collapsing.”

“Then you tell me.”

“You were going to let it fail.”

“Yes.”

“It employs four hundred people.”

“Don’t use employees as decoration for greed.”

Her face tightened.

Dominic watched them.

Marriage ending in real time.

Ugly.

Human.

Necessary.

Samuel entered.

“We found Marcus’s address.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Arizona?”

“No.”

Samuel placed a map down.

“Twenty-seven minutes from here.”

Daniel laughed once.

“Of course.”

The property belonged to Larkspur International.

A modest lakeside house registered through three companies.

Police obtained a warrant based on Daniel’s assault and suspected fraud.

Marcus was not there.

But the house contained files.

Lots of them.

Copies of trust documents.

Old Ferraro ledgers.

Elena’s estate correspondence.

Photographs of Maisie entering school.

Dominic stared at that one longest.

Someone had been watching his daughter.

Again.

One document caught Samuel’s attention.

Architectural plans.

The mansion.

A section beneath the wine cellar had been marked in red.

ROOM B.

Dominic frowned.

“There is no Room B.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How many secret rooms does this family have?”

“Apparently too many.”

They returned to the estate.

The wine cellar occupied the oldest section of the house.

Stone walls.

Oak racks.

Dusty bottles Dominic’s father collected and never drank.

Blueprints showed a false wall behind the third rack.

Security removed it.

A steel door appeared.

Combination lock.

Lenora stood at the top of the stairs, pale.

“I didn’t know.”

Dominic looked at her.

“I believe you.”

That seemed to hurt more than accusation.

Samuel found the combination inside Marcus’s seized files.

The door opened.

Room B smelled like paper.

Shelves.

Boxes.

A desk.

An old safe.

And on the wall—

a photograph of Angelo Ferraro, Marcus Vale, and Thomas Vane standing together twenty-five years earlier.

Daniel whispered:

“What the hell was this?”

Dominic walked inside.

The boxes contained decades of confidential family records.

Settlements.

Property agreements.

Corporate restructures.

Evidence of businesses Dominic had spent years moving away from.

Old crimes hidden under legal language.

Dominic felt no pride.

Only exhaustion.

Then Daniel opened the safe.

Inside were two folders.

One labeled ELENA.

The other labeled SUCCESSION.

Dominic opened Elena’s.

Letters.

Copies.

One recording device.

He pressed play.

Elena’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, then Marcus found a way back into the estate.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at him.

Elena continued:

“I don’t know whether Dominic will ever forgive me for doing this without him.”

A pause.

“But Angelo asked Marcus to keep the mansion inside the old trust no matter what happened.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“When Maisie was born, I learned why.”

Paper rustled.

“The old trust is not about inheritance.”

Another pause.

“It controls something under the property.”

Daniel frowned.

Dominic looked down.

Elena continued:

“I don’t know what it is.”

Then:

“But Marcus believes it is worth more than the mansion.”

The recording ended.

Everyone looked toward the stone floor.

The mansion fight suddenly had a second meaning.

Lenora whispered:

“What is underneath this house?”
