Chapter 10 - the golden horizon

Two months later, the morning sun rose bright and warm over the clear waters of New York Harbor, casting brilliant golden rays across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate.

The dark clouds that had hung over the family for months were completely gone. The Valenti syndicate had been dismantled by federal authorities, Marco Bellini was serving a life sentence, and peace had finally returned to Brooklyn.

In the sunlit garden overlooking the harbor, three-year-old Leo ran happily across the green grass, chasing a small golden retriever puppy Rico had bought for his birthday. The boy's laughter echoed warmly through the summer air—bright, loud, and completely free of trauma.

Sitting at a white wrought-iron table on the stone terrace was Clara. She wore an elegant light-blue summer dress, her brown hair flowing loose over her shoulders, her fair skin radiant in the sunlight. Around her neck, the silver locket sparkled under the sky.

Rico walked out onto the terrace carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his muscular, tattooed forearms, his dark hair styled naturally.

He set the glasses down and sat beside Clara, taking her hand in his broad palm.

"What are you thinking about, beautiful?" Rico asked softly, his intense dark eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable love.

Clara looked out at the water, then down at their hands joined together. "I was thinking about my sister Sarah... and Isabella. I think they brought me to Il Destino that night."

"I know they did," Rico murmured gently, leaning in to place a soft kiss on her cheek. "You saved my son, Clara. And you saved me."

Clara smiled, turning her head to kiss him back—a deep, sweet kiss that promised a lifetime of happiness.

"Mommy Clara! Daddy! Look!" Leo cheered, running up to the table holding the puppy in his arms, his little face beaming with pure joy.

Rico laughed—a rich, warm sound—and lifted his son into his lap, pulling Clara close to his side as they watched the ships glide across the sunlit harbor.

Suddenly, Dante walked out onto the terrace carrying a thick, wax-sealed envelope delivered by a private courier from Rome.

Dante handed the envelope to Rico, his face calm but focused. "This just arrived from the High Council in Palermo, boss."

Rico broke the heavy wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment written in fine gold calligraphy.

He read the first line, a quiet, subtle smile touching his lips as he looked at Clara.

Written on the parchment were only two sentences:

To Ricardo Moretti: The debt of Palermo is settled. But your late wife's hidden family estate in Sicily has just been unlocked by Clara's silver locket.

Clara looked at Rico, her brown eyes sparkling with excitement. "What does it say?"

Rico slowly folded the parchment, placed it into his pocket, and gently squeezed her hand, looking out toward the endless blue ocean horizon.

"It says our family is going to Italy, my love," Rico whispered softly into the warm summer breeze. "And our story is just getting started."
