Chapter 3 - the house on the harbor

The sleek black motorcade glided through the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate on the Brooklyn waterfront just as midnight struck. High stone walls, state-of-the-art security cameras, and armed guards in tailored suits lined the winding driveway.

The main mansion loomed against the dark night sky—a magnificent stone structure overlooking the churning dark waters of New York Harbor, its high windows reflecting the distant lights of the Manhattan skyline.

Dante opened the rear door of the armored SUV. Rico stepped out first, carrying the sleeping Leo gently in his broad arms. Clara stepped out behind him, holding a small canvas tote bag containing her few personal belongings.

She looked up at the intimidating fortress, feeling a cold shiver ripple through her frame. She had grown up in modest apartments in Queens, working two jobs just to cover rent and pay off her late sister's medical debts. Standing on the estate of a Mafia Don felt like stepping into another world entirely.

"This way," Dante said respectfully, guiding Clara through the grand oak front doors.

The foyer was breathtaking—soaring ceilings, marble staircases, and warm oil paintings lining the walls. But beneath the luxury, Clara could feel a palpable sense of heavy, lingering grief. The house felt like a golden cage, hollow and quiet.

Rico carried Leo up the grand staircase, motioning for Clara to follow. They entered a large, beautifully decorated nursery filled with wooden toys, hand-painted murals, and a plush armchair near the window.

Rico set Leo down onto his small bed, pulling the soft blue blanket over his shoulders. The toddler stirred slightly, his little hands reaching out blindly in his sleep, whimpering softly.

Clara stepped up to the side of the bed, kneeling down and taking Leo's small hand in hers. The moment his little fingers felt her touch, his whimpering stopped, his breathing smoothing out into deep slumber.

Rico watched from the foot of the bed, his dark eyes tracking every move Clara made. The cold, ruthless boss who commanded hundreds of men looked suddenly vulnerable in the quiet dim light of his son's room.

"His mother used to sing to him," Rico murmured softly, his voice rough with emotion. "Since the accident six months ago... he wakes up screaming every two hours."

Clara looked up at Rico, seeing the profound exhaustion etched beneath his ruggedly handsome features. "Trauma is heavy for a child so small, Mr. Moretti. He doesn't understand where the love went."

"Call me Rico," he said softly, his dark gaze locking onto hers with intense focus. "No one in this house calls me sir except the guards."

Suddenly, Dante appeared at the nursery doorway, his face unusually grave as he motioned for Rico to step outside.

Rico gently stepped out into the hallway, leaving Clara beside the bed.

"What is it, Dante?" Rico asked, his tone instantly hardening back into authority.

Dante handed Rico a encrypted tablet showing a background dossier. "We ran Clara Vance's social security number through our federal backchannels. Her official records were wiped clean five years ago by a top-tier intelligence firm in Manhattan."

Rico’s eyes narrowed into razor-sharp focus. "Wiped by who?"

"By the Valenti syndicate," Dante whispered grimly. "Boss... Clara isn't just a random waitress. She was placed at Il Destino three weeks ago under a false identity."
