Chapter 1

Dr. Elias Warren did not let the broken blood tray stop the medicine.
“New samples. Now.”
Two nurses moved immediately. Bianca’s blood pressure had been dangerously high twice within twenty minutes, and she had arrived complaining of a severe headache, flashing lights in her vision, and pain beneath her right ribs. At thirty-five weeks pregnant, those symptoms made Elias concerned about preeclampsia with severe features and possible liver or platelet complications.
Gavin stepped forward again.
Marcello moved between him and the bed.
A hospital security officer moved between both men.
“Everybody stays where they are.”
Bianca reached for Elias.
“Do whatever tests you need.”
That settled the medical question.
The new blood samples left the room under normal laboratory chain procedures. Urine testing, fetal monitoring, and repeat blood-pressure measurements continued while hospital security called police because Gavin had deliberately knocked medical equipment from a physician’s hands during active treatment.
Marcello remained beside Bianca.
She was trembling beneath the blanket.
“What did they make you sign?”
“Nothing yet.”
Her voice cracked.
“They were trying.”
She pointed toward the torn documents on Gavin’s chest.
The packet was titled:
GLOBAL PROPERTY TRANSFER AND SPONSOR SUPPORT AGREEMENT
Schedules listed six commercial properties, two hotels, and a warehouse complex with a combined stated value of approximately $52 million.
The transferor was identified as:
Bianca Orsini Rusk, beneficial owner and authorized principal.
Marcello almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because every listed property belonged to entities he controlled.
Bianca was president of Orsini Property Management.
She negotiated leases.
Signed vendor contracts within delegated authority.
Managed renovations.
Sometimes appeared in press photographs beside buildings newspapers lazily called “the Orsini daughter’s portfolio.”
She did not own the portfolio.
Marcello did.
Through operating companies, directly held LLC interests, and documented title structures his lawyers could prove parcel by parcel.
Detective Sarah Monroe arrived while Marcello was still reading.
She reviewed hospital security footage first.
Gavin knocked the tray away.
Lenora placed the pen beside Bianca.
Marcello entered.
Bianca spoke.
Marcello struck Gavin after no physical attack was occurring against him.
The detective asked him directly:
“Why did you slap Mr. Rusk?”
Marcello answered just as directly.
“Because I saw my pregnant daughter terrified and believed he was coercing her.”
“Was he attacking her at the moment you struck him?”
“No.”
“Then that will be reviewed separately.”
“I understand.”
No claim that being a father made retaliation self-defense.
Then Elias handed Marcello the sealed folder.
Bianca had given it to him thirty minutes before Marcello arrived.
She had brought it hidden beneath her cardigan when Gavin drove her to the hospital.
Inside were Rusk development-company financial statements, lender emails, a copy of a construction-loan default notice, and photographs Bianca had taken of documents in Gavin’s home office.
One email caught Marcello immediately.
Northbridge requires executed Orsini support package by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow or standstill terminates.
Another:
No extension absent Bianca signature.
Marcello looked at Gavin.
“You didn’t come for buildings.”
Gavin said nothing.
Marcello turned another page.
A spreadsheet showed a column labeled:
ORP CONTRIBUTION — $52.0M
ORP.
Orsini real property.
Except none of it belonged to Bianca.
Then Elias returned from the nurses’ station.
“Mr. Orsini, your daughter is being transferred upstairs to labor and delivery. Her pressure remains too high.”
Bianca looked toward Gavin.
His face changed.

Not because he suddenly became frightened for the baby.
Because the clock he had been racing just got shorter.
