Chương 7 - the mother's legacy

By noon, the estate was secure once more. Fresh glass had been installed in the dining hall windows, security patrols had been doubled along the perimeter walls, and the afternoon sun cast warm golden light across the living room carpet.

Emily sat on the plush sofa, watching four-year-old Maya and three-year-old Lily draw pictures with colored pencils on the coffee table. The two girls were laughing happily, completely oblivious to the war that had raged outside their bedroom hours earlier.

Ryan walked into the living room, wearing a fresh tailored black suit. He carried a heavy metal box that Marcus had recovered from Luke's private safe deposit box in downtown Chicago an hour ago.

He set the box on the coffee table beside the girls' drawing pads.

"What's in the box, Ryan?" Emily asked, sitting up.

Ryan used a small silver key to pop the heavy brass latch. He lifted the lid, revealing several thick stacks of legal deeds, an encrypted digital drive, and a small leather-bound journal.

Ryan pulled out the journal, opening the cover. Written on the first page in clear, elegant handwriting was a message signed by Luke Vane three weeks before his death:

To my brother Ryan,

If you are reading this, it means I have fallen, and Anna has brought our daughter Maya to your gates. The digital drive in this box contains the complete transaction history of the Vane European Trust—a two-hundred-million-dollar fund established by our grandfather.

Victor Valenti wants this drive because my death automatically transfers fifty percent of the trust to his shell company... UNLESS Maya is legally adopted by you as her primary guardian before her fifth birthday.

Ryan set the journal down, his dark eyes meeting Emily's. "Valenti wasn't just trying to kill Luke's bloodline, Emily. He was trying to prevent me from legally adopting Maya so he could seize the European trust."

Emily looked down at little Maya, who was happily coloring a picture of a yellow sun. Emily reached out, taking Ryan's broad hand in hers, her blue eyes shining with fierce, unshakeable devotion.

"Then we adopt her today, Ryan," Emily said softly. "She is already our daughter."

Ryan looked at his wife, a rare, profound warmth touching his rugged features. He reached down, picking up both Maya and Lily into his massive arms, holding them tight against his chest.

"Marcus," Ryan called out to his security chief standing near the doorway. "Call our family attorney. File the emergency adoption papers with the probate judge immediately."
