Chapter 14

Back at the Moretti estate, the quiet hours before dawn blanketed the grand mansion in a deceptive, serene stillness. The violent storm over Lake Michigan had subsided into a steady, rhythmic rain that tapped gently against the tall French windows of the library. Towering floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, filled with thousands of leather-bound volumes, legal treaties, and corporate archives. A massive stone fireplace burned low in the corner, casting long, golden embers across the Persian rug.
Dominic had returned from the Calumet facility an hour prior. He stood behind his massive mahogany desk, dressed in a fresh dark charcoal dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up, the dark tattoos on his forearms catching the firelight. Spread out before him were detailed blueprints of the South Side rail yard, satellite reconnaissance photos, and logistics manifests for Pier 42.
A soft, hesitant creak from the library doorway broke his concentration.
Dominic’s sharp eyes snapped toward the entrance, his hand dropping instinctively toward the custom sidearm holstered beneath his left arm. But the lethal tension evaporated instantly.
Standing in the doorway, looking impossibly small beneath the towering archway, was Lily.
She was wearing a soft, oversized pair of clean cotton pajamas that Mrs. Gable had provided, but she had stubbornly refused to part with her oversized burgundy knit cardigan, wrapping it tightly around her frame. Her honey-brown hair had been washed and brushed, falling neatly past her shoulders, though she still wore the faded blue ribbon tied loosely at the nape of her neck. Her right wrist was neatly encased in Dr. Campbell’s black fiberglass splint. In her hands, she clutched the blue-and-gray knitted blanket that had wrapped Noah.
"Lily," Dominic said, his deep voice immediately softening, the hardened mafia boss retreating behind the posture of a quiet guardian. "What are you doing awake? It is nearly four in the morning."
Lily stepped into the vast room, her bare feet silent on the thick Persian rug. She looked around the majestic library in wide-eyed wonder, her natural micro-expressions conveying the timid awe of a child walking through a museum. She stopped a few feet from the desk, holding the baby blanket against her chest.
"I couldn't sleep," Lily confessed quietly, her voice trembling slightly. "The bed is too soft. It’s too big. And... it’s too quiet. In the subway tunnels, there was always noise. Trains, water dripping, rats. Here, it feels like I’m waiting for something bad to happen."
Dominic looked at her with a profound, aching understanding. He knew that feeling intimately. When you spent your life surviving in the dark, peace felt like an ambush waiting to spring.
Dominic walked around the massive desk and slowly sat down on the edge of the leather sofa near the fireplace. He patted the cushion beside him. "Come sit by the fire. The heat will help."
Lily walked over and climbed onto the sofa, tucking her small feet beneath her. She stared into the glowing orange embers of the hearth, the warmth bringing a healthy, rosy flush back to her cheeks.
"How is Noah?" Dominic asked gently.
"He’s sleeping like an angel," Lily smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression that lit up her entire face. "Rosa stayed in the room with him. She gave him another bottle an hour ago. His cheeks aren't so pale anymore. Dominic... the doctor said the medicine in the IV is making him strong."
"Dr. Campbell is the best in the city," Dominic assured her. "Noah is going to be completely healthy, Lily. You saved his life."
Lily looked down at the blue-and-gray blanket in her lap. Her small fingers began to trace the thick, hand-knitted yarn near the hem. A heavy silence settled between them, broken only by the crackle of the burning wood.
"Dominic?" Lily whispered softly.
"Yes, little one?"
"You asked me earlier if my dad left me an encrypted file," she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur.
Dominic went completely still. His gray-blue eyes locked onto her with a restrained, intensely focused gaze. "Did he?"
Lily didn't answer with words. She turned the knitted blanket over, exposing the thick, reinforced wool seam along the bottom border. With careful, delicate movements using her uninjured hand and teeth, she gently worked loose a hidden nylon thread that had been meticulously woven into the fabric. The seam parted slightly, revealing a tiny, rectangular pocket concealed within the wool.
Lily reached inside with two small fingers and pulled out a microscopic, black plastic object.
It was an ultra-high-density micro-SD card, encased in a waterproof polymer sleeve.
She held it out on her small, open palm, offering it to Dominic.
"My dad sewed it into Noah’s blanket the night he ran," Lily whispered, her eyes filling with fresh tears as the memory surfaced. "He told me, 'Lily, if the bad men catch me, this little chip is the only thing that proves I’m innocent. Don't give it to anyone. Don't give it to the police, don't give it to the lawyers. Only give it to a man who has the power to destroy the monsters.'"
Lily looked up into Dominic’s strikingly handsome, scarred, and tattooed face—the face of a man who commanded a criminal empire, yet had knelt in the dirt to feed her starving brother and broken the hand of her tormentor.
"My dad said to give it to someone who could destroy the monsters," Lily said, her voice clear and unwavering. "I think that’s you, Dominic."
Dominic stared at the tiny black chip resting on her fragile hand. The sheer weight of the child's trust hit him with the force of an avalanche. In a world defined by greed, treachery, and bloodshed, this starving little girl had handed him the ultimate key to his own empire.

Dominic slowly reached out his large, heavily tattooed hand. With infinite gentleness, he picked up the micro-SD card, feeling the cool plastic against his calloused fingertips. He closed his fist around it, his jaw hardening into a mask of pure, absolute resolve.
"You did the right thing, Lily," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with a fierce, paternal vow. "I am going to bring your father home."
