Chapter 15

The private cybersecurity lab in the sub-basement of the Moretti estate hummed with the high-frequency whine of liquid-cooled servers and fiber-optic processors. Cool, fluorescent blue light washed over the room, reflecting off the banks of high-resolution monitors lining the walls. Dominic stood in the center of the lab, flanked by Vance and his chief technical officer, a brilliant thirty-five-year-old former NSA cryptographer named Paul.
Paul inserted the micro-SD card into an isolated, air-gapped terminal. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed, executing advanced decryption algorithms to strip away the multi-layered cryptographic shell Daniel Evans had placed around the data.
"He knew what he was doing," Paul muttered, adjusting his glasses as lines of green code cascaded down the primary display. "Evans didn't just dump raw files; he compiled an entire forensic accounting dossier. He built a digital timeline."
With a sharp, triumphant chime, the final encryption wall collapsed, and the screen flashed: ACCESS GRANTED.
Dominic leaned over the console, his piercing gray-blue eyes scanning the files. What unfolded before him was a staggering, multi-million-dollar blueprint of high treason.
For the past eighteen months, Salvatore Rossi had been utilizing Dominic’s legitimate commercial freight lines at Pier 42 to bypass federal customs inspections. The manifests had been systematically altered to mislabel shipping containers originating from Eastern Europe as agricultural machinery. In reality, the containers held thousands of military-grade assault rifles, armor-piercing ammunition, night-vision tactical systems, and plastic explosives. The recipient of these weapons was a violent, rogue cartel operating out of Detroit, led by a ruthless warlord named Viktor Vance.
Worse, the financial ledgers revealed that Sal was skimming twenty percent of the profits into offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands, amassing a private war chest of over forty million dollars. The end goal detailed in the intercepted communications was chillingly clear: Sal was planning to stage a coordinated, decapitating strike against Dominic Moretti within the next three months, seizing total control of the Chicago syndicate.
Daniel Evans had discovered the fraudulent customs manifests during a routine quarterly audit. When Evans confronted Sal, believing it was an internal accounting error, Sal realized his entire coup was jeopardized.
"Look at this timestamp, Boss," Vance pointed to an encrypted audio recording dated three weeks ago.
Paul clicked the file. A rough, gravelly voice echoed through the lab’s speakers—Salvatore Rossi.
"Listen to me, Evans. You take the five hundred grand, you sign off on the Pier 42 manifests, and you forget you ever saw those container numbers. Dominic is living in the past with his 'no drugs, no illegal weapons' rules. The city belongs to the men with the biggest guns. You play ball, or I will feed your children to the fishes in Lake Michigan."
Then came the frantic, desperate voice of Daniel Evans: "I work for Mr. Moretti! I won't falsify federal shipping logs! You're bringing weapons of war into our city!"
The recording ended with the sound of a violent scuffle, followed by a dial tone.
Dominic’s breathing remained dangerously calm, but the air in the lab grew suffocatingly dense. The sheer arrogance of Salvatore Rossi was breathtaking. Sal had violated the core tenets of the Moretti family, endangered Dominic’s legitimate corporate holdings, and threatened to butcher an innocent accountant's family to fund a coup.
"Paul," Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute monotone. "Clone this drive. Transmit an encrypted copy directly to the Special Agent in Charge at the Chicago FBI Field Office, but omit any mention of Daniel Evans or my name. Let federal authorities seize Sal's offshore accounts and revoke his maritime licenses at dawn."
"Yes, Boss," Paul nodded, executing the command immediately.
"And what about the rail yard, Dominic?" Vance asked, his hand resting on the grip of his sidearm. "If Sal realizes the feds are freezing his accounts, he will execute Evans immediately and go into hiding."
"Sal won't have the chance to run," Dominic stated, turning toward the armory doors. "The federal government can dismantle his paper empire tomorrow morning. But tonight... the blood belongs to me."
Dominic walked into the private tactical armory. He pulled a customized, suppressed tactical carbine from the wall rack, checking the optical sight with practiced precision. He strapped a secondary ballistic vest over his black tactical shirt and slid two spare magazines into his tactical belt.

He turned to Vance, his piercing gray-blue eyes burning with the lethal, righteous wrath of a king preparing to purge a traitor from his court.
"Assemble Alpha and Bravo teams at the south gate," Dominic ordered. "We breach the South Side rail yard in twenty minutes. If anyone raises a weapon to defend Salvatore Rossi, eliminate them with extreme prejudice. I want Daniel Evans brought out alive, and I want Sal on his knees."
