Chapter 14 - the dawn of the don

By 3:00 AM, the city’s ruling council had ratified every decree without a single dissenting vote.

Victor Bellacorte was officially reinstated as the supreme Don of the Five Families. The Moreau syndicate was reorganized under Marcus’s direct, restored command. Celeste was already aboard an offshore freighter steaming toward South America, stripped of every cent and connection she had ever possessed.

The ballroom auction, the stolen assets, the traitors within the ranks—the direct rebellion that had threatened to tear the city apart had been crushed in a single, brutal night of tactical precision.

In the private penthouse suite above the Bellacorte headquarters, Sophia was fast asleep in a massive king-sized bed, clutching a stuffed bear Mother Beatrice had packed for her.

Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the first grey light of dawn break over the Manhattan skyline.

Marcus knocked gently and stepped in, holding two crystal glasses of aged scotch. He handed one to Victor.

"She looks just like her," Marcus murmured, looking toward the sleeping child. "Elena’s spirit. Never cried once during the raids. Never backed down."

Victor took a slow sip, the amber liquid burning his throat. "You took a bullet for her, Marcus. You endured torture from your own daughter to keep her safe."

Marcus looked down at the floor, shame tightening his features. "Celeste was poisoned by greed, Victor. Rossi promised her the world, and she swallowed the lie whole. I should have seen it coming."

"Greed makes fools of everyone," Victor replied. "You gave me back my family. That washes away any sin of your bloodline."

Julian Vance entered the suite, holding the tarnished brass key Mother Beatrice had given Victor at the convent.

"The vault is cleared, Don Bellacorte," Julian said. "The High Council has evacuated the subterranean level as requested. You may access Elena’s private safety deposit box undisturbed."

Victor looked down at the brass key.

The immediate war was won. Rossi was in chains. Celeste was exiled. His daughter was safe in his arms, and his throne was secure.

Yet an unshakable knot remained in Victor’s gut. Elena was meticulous. She had escaped the yacht fire, had given birth in secret, and had lived in hiding for three years before succumbing to illness.

Why had she kept a separate deposit box that Marcus knew nothing about?

Victor drained his glass. "Watch over Sophia," he told Marcus. "I won't be long."
