Chapter 6 - the lock of hair

Victor didn't wait for daylight.
His convoy cut through the winding mountain roads of the Hudson Valley at ninety miles an hour, tires hissing against the rain-slicked asphalt. Inside the lead car, Victor sat in the back with the sapphire pendant resting in his palm.
He turned the piece over. At the base of the platinum rose was a microscopic pinhole—a release catch known only to the craftsman who built it in Milan.
Victor pulled a pocketknife from his vest and pressed the fine tip of the blade into the catch.
A soft *click* sounded.
The back of the pendant sprang open, revealing an oval compartment beneath the stone.
Inside lay a tiny, coiled lock of hair tied with a faded red ribbon.
Victor’s heart slammed against his ribs. The hair was not the deep, raven black of his wife Elena.
It was soft, bright spun-gold. The hair of a young child.
"Elena couldn't have children," Victor murmured, his voice cracking for the first time that night.
Julian, sitting in the passenger seat, looked back over his shoulder. The elder's face was drawn, lines of exhaustion etched deep into his skin.
"Don Bellacorte," Julian said carefully, "there were rumors during the final months before the harbor fire. Rumors that Marcus Moreau had been seen visiting an obstetric clinic in Boston on behalf of your family."
"Elena never went to Boston," Victor snapped. "I was in Chicago handling the northern territory."
"Elena didn't go," Julian said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Marcus took a surrogate."
Victor’s hands gripped the knife so hard the metal bit into his skin. "You kept this from me for seven years?"
"I had no proof, Victor! Marcus swore upon the High Council oath that the trip was related to pharmaceutical investments. If I had brought you baseless rumors while your syndicate was in the middle of a territory war, it would have torn the family apart!"
Before Victor could respond, the lead car crested the hill.
The Cold Spring hunting lodge appeared through the pine trees. It was an imposing stone and timber fortress nestled against the cliffside. Every window was dark, but through the rain, Victor saw fresh tire tracks cutting through the gravel driveway.
