Chapter 1 - the beast at the armchair

The heavy mahogany doors of the master suite stood wide open, exposing the tense, suffocating atmosphere inside the luxury estate. Resting motionless in his broad leather armchair was thirty-eight-year-old Adrian Moretti. The feared Chicago mafia boss was dressed in a dark tailored suit, a crisp dark dress shirt, and his signature black felt hat, his sharp jaw framed by a full dark beard. He lay completely unconscious, his head tilted back against the leather cushion, his face pale beneath the warm chandelier light.
Standing directly in front of the armchair was Titan—a massive black-and-tan guard dog wearing a heavy spiked leather collar. Titan’s chest heaved with deep, terrifying rumbles as he bared his long white fangs at the six armed guards gathered near the doorway. His ears were pinned back, his eyes burning with lethal aggression.
Dante Russo, Adrian’s thirty-five-year-old head of security, held his broad hands out in front of his dark suit, his voice dropping into an urgent, hushed warning.
Dante Russo: "Nobody move! That dog will rip apart anyone who gets near Mr. Moretti!"
Dr. Reynolds, holding a black medical bag, took a nervous step backward, sweating profusely under the intense glare of the beast. None of the broad-shouldered enforcers dared to draw a weapon or take a single step toward the unconscious Don.
Suddenly, a small figure stepped through the gap between two guards.
Five-year-old Sophia Castillo walked into the room. She wore a bright pink floral puff-sleeve dress with matching pink bows tied in her hair, clutching a worn brown teddy bear tightly against her chest. Her small shoes clicked softly against the hardwood floor as she marched toward the terrifying dog.
From the doorway, twenty-eight-year-old Elena Castillo gasped in sheer horror. Dressed in her neat black-and-white maid uniform with a clean white apron and maid headband, her dark hair pulled back neatly, the young mother covered her mouth with trembling hands.
Elena Castillo: "Sophia, no! Come back!"
Elena reached out to snatch her daughter, but Dante caught her arm, keeping her back for her own safety.
Sophia didn't stop. She walked straight past the trembling guards, stopping less than a foot away from the massive guard dog's snapping jaws. She raised her small, fair hand toward Titan's broad head, looking into the dog's fierce eyes with complete, fearless innocence.
Sophia Castillo: "It's okay, big boy... you're just scared for him."
The entire room went completely still. Guards held their breath, expecting the worst.
Instead, Titan’s deep growl instantly ceased. The massive beast lowered his tail, tilted his broad head, and let out a soft, gentle whine. He leaned his broad snout directly into the five-year-old girl's palm, allowing her to stroke his soft fur between his ears.
Sophia turned her small face back toward Dr. Reynolds and the stunned guards, continuing to gently stroke Titan's head as the beast sat quietly at her side, his body forming a protective shield around her.
Sophia Castillo: "He says you can help his daddy now."

Dr. Reynolds didn't waste another second. He rushed forward alongside Elena to examine the unconscious Mafia Don, while Titan remained perfectly calm beside the little girl in the pink floral dress.
As Dr. Reynolds pulled back Adrian's wrist to check his pulse, he noticed a tiny silver locket tucked beneath the spiked leather collar of the dog—a locket that Sophia gently unlatched, revealing a photograph of Elena from six years ago.
