Chapter 2 - the seat of stolen authority

The brief commotion at the edge of the table attracted subtle glances from the high-ranking members scattered across the room, but no one dared to speak up. Victoria Crane’s social and financial capital had skyrocketed over the last five years, and her husband Damian was aggressively positioning himself as the undisputed successor to the family’s vast corporate and underground holdings.
Damian stepped forward, letting out a deep, mocking chuckle that cut through the soft classical music playing in the background. He didn’t even glance down at the old man in the wheelchair. Instead, he strolled casually up the two carpeted steps to the elevated head table, pulled out the grand high-backed velvet chair reserved exclusively for the head of the house, and sat down.
He crossed his legs comfortably, resting his arm over the carved wooden chair, taking a slow sip from a glass of twenty-year-old scotch.
Around the room, several older associates lowered their eyes, uncomfortable with the blatant disrespect, yet too cautious to intervene. The power dynamic in the room seemed clear: youth, wealth, and ruthless ambition were supplanting old age and frail tradition.
Victoria took another step closer to Augustus's wheelchair. She leaned down until her face was mere inches from his, her heavy floral perfume clouding the air between them. Her diamonds caught the bright light, flashing brilliantly against her fair skin.
She raised a manicured hand and patted Augustus on his shoulder with a patronizing, condescending air, as if soothing a helpless child.
"You should be grateful we still allow you to stay here," Victoria whispered with a cold, mocking smile.
The quiet arrogance in her voice was absolute. She truly believed that the frail old man sitting beneath her judgment was powerless, a forgotten relic existing purely by her generosity.
She turned her back to him, raising her glass toward Damian at the head table, preparing to announce their dominance to the entire gathering.

She didn't notice the sudden change in the air. She didn't notice that Augustus’s breathing hadn't altered by a single beat.
And she certainly didn't expect the hands on the wheelchair armrests to tighten.
