Chapter 5 - shadows of the foundation

The silence following Augustus’s declaration felt heavier than a granite tomb. Damian stood motionless, his arm half-raised in a gesture of anger that had now transformed into utter foolishness. His eyes darted frantically across the room, searching for a single ally who would stand with him, but every head remained bowed, every senior figure locked in silent obedience to Augustus.
Victoria scrambled up from the floor, her crimson gown rumpled, her golden hair disheveled. The sharp sting on her fair cheek was nothing compared to the cold panic spreading through her chest. She reached out and grabbed Damian’s forearm, her fingers digging through his black tuxedo sleeve.
"Damian..." she breathed, her voice trembling, stripped entirely of its former arrogance. "Damian, what is this?"
Damian didn't answer. He couldn't.
Augustus stepped past them without giving either of them a second glance. His stride was smooth, dignified, and entirely unhurried. He walked up the carpeted steps to the head table, pulled back the center velvet chair that Damian had occupied moments before, and sat down. He adjusted his silk tie, smoothed the front of his midnight-blue jacket, and placed his hands flat on the table.
On his right pinky, the gold signet ring caught the overhead light.
"Sit," Augustus said quietly.
It wasn't a command yelled in anger; it was an instruction spoken by a king to restless children.
Instantly, every senior leader in the room pulled out their chairs and sat down in unison. The hall settled into a quiet, tense composure, though no one touched their wine or spoke a word.

Damian swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked down at Victoria, whose rosy complexion had turned deathly pale. For years, they had believed they were climbing to the top of a pyramid built by Damian's father. They believed the family history began thirty years ago with modern money and corporate buyouts.
They had no idea that the foundation beneath their feet was poured fifty years ago in blood and iron by a man who had chosen to retreat into the shadows while the world forgot his face.
