Chapter 1 - your eyes moved

The east wing bedroom of the Moretti estate was bathed in bright, cinematic sunlight streaming through high arched windows. Golden light illuminated plush velvet drapes, warm hardwood, and sleek marble trim. Yet despite the opulent warmth of the room, an atmosphere of tense silence hung heavy in the air. At the center of the grand suite lay Matteo Moretti, resting in a luxurious state-of-the-art medical bed. His dark hair was arranged neatly against white pillows, light stubble framing his jaw. Though calm and motionless as he recovered from a devastating head injury, his strong, handsome features bore the quiet mark of resilience. Beside him, vital signs beat rhythmically on a monitor, soft electronic chimes filling the room.

Sitting in a leather armchair beside the bed was Dante Moretti. Tall, broad-shouldered, and immensely muscular, Dante possessed an overwhelming commanding presence. Long dark hair brushed his collar, framing a sharp jawline with a full dark beard and piercing blue eyes that missed nothing. Intricate tattoos stretched up his neck, disappearing beneath the tailored collar of his pristine black dress shirt, black tie, and crisp black suit. A luxury gold wristwatch glinted on his wrist as he sat back, motionless, eyes fixed on his quiet brother.

A subtle rustle made Dante glance toward the foot of the bed. Three-year-old Mia Ruiz had quietly wandered into the room. Tiny and sweet, she wore a pale-blue dress adorned with tiny floral embroidery, small pink sneakers, and a bright white bow holding back her soft brown hair. Rosy cheeks and bright, fearless eyes gave her an innocent curiosity that stood out in stark contrast to the heavy silence of the estate.

Mia stepped closer to the edge of the bed, balancing on her tiptoes. She stared intently at Matteo’s peaceful face for several long seconds, her eyebrows knitting together in deep concentration.

Suddenly, Mia raised a tiny hand and pointed directly at Matteo's face.

"Your eyes just moved, Uncle," Mia said softly, her sweet toddler voice cutting through the room.
