Chapter 8 - the trap is set

Dante stood by the foot of Matteo’s bed, looking down at his quiet brother. The anger that usually burned like an inferno inside him was replaced by a terrifying, absolute focus.
"Switch the drip," Dante ordered Nina quietly. "Replace it with clean saline immediately. How long until the inhibitor clears his system?"
"Twelve to eighteen hours," Nina replied, already swapping the IV line with practiced speed. "By tomorrow morning, his neural pathways will start firing normally."
Dante turned to Elina. "Take Mia back to the inner room. Lock the door."
Elina nodded quickly, clutching her daughter against her shoulder as she hurried into the adjoining bedroom.
Dante turned back to Nina. "Tomorrow morning, we announce that Matteo's condition has critical complications. We let the traitor think the inhibitor did its job permanently. When they come to verify it, we catch them."

"And if they try to finish the job tonight?" Nina asked quietly, adjusting the new IV flow rate.
Dante reached into his belt holster, pulled out a sleek black sidearm, and laid it quietly on the bedside stand. "I won't be far."
