Chapter 11 - shifting power

By five o'clock in the morning, the storm over Manhattan had cleared, leaving the sky painted in soft hues of purple and gold.

The Caruso estate was quiet. Police sedans and federal transport vans lined the long driveway as Vincent Romano and Marco were led away in heavy steel handcuffs, facing life imprisonment for racketeering, conspiracy, and murder.

The internal purge of the Caruso syndicate was absolute.

Gabriel sat behind his desk in his top-floor office, wearing a fresh navy suit. The sixty-million-dollar port acquisition documents lay open before him.

Hannah walked into the room, wearing a simple, elegant cream dress Bernadette had provided from the guest wardrobe. She carried Grace in her arms. The baby was happily playing with the silver Saint Christopher medal hanging around her neck.

Gabriel stood up from his chair, walking around the desk to meet them.

"The federal authorities have frozen Vincent’s accounts," Gabriel reported softly. "And the District Attorney has officially closed the investigation into Julian’s crash."

Hannah looked into his gray-blue eyes, her face filled with deep gratitude. "Is it really over, Gabriel?"

"The threat inside this house is over," Gabriel said.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek gold fountain pen. He laid the sixty-million-dollar port contract on the table, turning to the master signature page.

In front of Hannah, Gabriel crossed out his own name as the sole beneficiary.

In clean, firm cursive, he wrote: THE GRACE REED-CARUSO TRUST — GUARDIAN: HANNAH REED.

Hannah covered her mouth with both hands, fresh tears filling her eyes. "Gabriel... what are you doing?"

"This port acquisition belongs to Julian's daughter," Gabriel declared, signing his name as executive trustee at the bottom. "Fifty percent of the Caruso empire's annual revenue will be deposited directly into this trust until Grace turns twenty-one."

He looked at Hannah, his expression filled with profound warmth and respect.

"And you will never work as a maid again," Gabriel added softly. "You are the mother of the Caruso heir. This estate is your home for as long as you wish to stay."

Hannah stepped forward, throwing her arms around his neck, holding him tightly as Grace babbled happily between them. Gabriel wrapped his broad arms around both of them, feeling a deep, quiet sense of emotional justice and family completion.
