Chapter 7 - fractured trust

By two o'clock in the morning, the Caruso estate was under total lockdown. Heavy iron grates covered the lower windows, and twenty armed guards patrolled the perimeter grounds.

Gabriel sat behind his desk in the dark study, an glass of untouched Scotch resting near his hand.

Hannah walked in quietly, holding a sleeping Grace in her arms. She set the baby down on the plush velvet sofa in the corner and walked over to Gabriel’s desk.

"You haven't slept, Gabriel," she said softly, her brown eyes filled with concern.

Gabriel looked up at her. The ivory suit jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the dark, disciplined lines of his muscle and subtle ink along his wrist.

"Vincent ran because he knows I have the Cayman ledgers now," Gabriel said, his voice quiet. "He spent twenty years managing my family's wealth, but Julian caught him skimming from account 7704-B."

"So Vincent killed Julian to cover up the theft?" Hannah asked, sitting in the leather chair across from him.

"It wasn't just skimming," Gabriel revealed, reaching into his drawer and pulling out a second file. "Vincent was funneling Caruso money into a private mercenary syndicate based in Montreal. He was building an army to take over my territory from the inside."

Hannah reached across the mahogany desk, her fingers gently touching the back of Gabriel's hand. "Gabriel... you saved Grace tonight. You risked a war with Chicago for a child you met four hours ago."

Gabriel looked down at her small, delicate hand resting against his calloused skin. The emotional wall he had maintained for fifteen years—the cold, unyielding mask of a Mafia boss—cracked completely.

"She has Julian's eyes," Gabriel said softly, his voice thick with buried grief. "And she has my blood. As long as I draw breath, no one will ever hurt either of you again."

Hannah’s breath hitched. She looked into his gray-blue eyes, seeing the deep, fiercely protective soul beneath the intimidating exterior.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the corridor outside.

Gabriel's hand moved instantly to his gun, but before he could stand, the lights in the study flickered and died, plunging the entire floor into pitch blackness.

Grace let out a sudden, frightened cry from the sofa.

"Gabriel!" Hannah gasped in the dark.

"Stay down!" Gabriel barked, vaulting over the desk and scooping Grace into his left arm while aiming his pistol toward the double doors with his right.

Red emergency lights flashed on along the baseboards.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the red glow, was Vincent Romano. He wore a dark tactical coat, holding a silenced submachine gun. Standing behind him were four heavily armed mercenaries in black tactical gear.

Vincent raised his weapon, a dark, cold smile spreading across his silver-bearded face.

"Hand over the Cayman keycard, Gabriel," Vincent sneered. "Or your brother's child dies tonight."
