Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Espresso

The high-pitched wail of sirens cut through the quiet streets of the affluent Chicago neighborhood as two paramedic units skidded to a halt before the wrought-iron gates of the Petrov estate. Within seconds, emergency responders swarmed the grand study, unleashing a flurry of chaotic action against the silence of the mansion.
Dmitri stood rigid against the mahogany bookshelves, his dark tailored suit wrinkled, his knuckles white as he watched the paramedics slide a breathing tube down Alexei's throat and haul his unconscious body onto a gurney.
"He has a weak pulse! Severe respiratory depression!" one paramedic shouted, pumping a manual bag-valve mask over Alexei's pale face. "What did he ingest?!"
"We don't know!" Dmitri barked, his voice laced with dangerous authority. "Just fix him!"
Alina stood in the corner of the study, holding four-year-old Sophie tightly against her hip. The little girl buried her head into her mother's shoulder, her yellow princess dress wrinkled against Alina's black apron. Alina's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She watched the paramedics wheel the billionaire out of the room under heavy escort, surrounded by armed bodyguards who looked ready to tear the city apart.
The moment the front double doors slammed shut behind the gurney, the atmosphere in the estate shifted from chaotic panic to terrifying lockdown.
Heavy iron security shutters descended over every window with a deafening mechanical thud, sealing the mansion into total darkness lit only by interior chandeliers.
Dmitri turned around slowly, his stern face flushed with cold rage. He pulled a silver tactical radio from his belt. "Lock down the perimeter. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. Check every security tape from the last twelve hours."
He snapped his radio off and turned his piercing gaze directly onto Alina.
Alina shrank back slightly, pressing Sophie closer to her chest. "Mr. Volkov... I... I don't know what happened. I was just folding towels in the corner—"
"Who prepared Mr. Petrov's morning tray?" Dmitri demanded, stepping toward her with towering, intimidating strides.
"The head chef, Marcus," Alina stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "I... I brought the tray from the kitchen lift twenty minutes ago. I set it on the side table near the desk just like I do every morning!"
Dmitri’s eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits. He walked over to the desk, looking down at the fallen crystal glass and the untouched cup of cold espresso sitting beside the spilled water.
He pulled a pair of black latex gloves from his pocket, snapping them onto his hands. Carefully, he picked up the small porcelain espresso cup, sniffing the dark rim. A faint, bitter smell of crushed almond lingered in the steam.
"Potassium cyanide mixed with a slow-release sedative," Dmitri growled softly under his breath. "Designed to paralyze his throat before stopping his heart."
He turned back to Alina, his presence heavy and terrifying. "You carried the tray, Alina. You were the only person who touched that cup between the kitchen lift and his desk."
Alina’s face went completely white. "No! Mr. Volkov, I swear on my daughter's life! I would never harm Mr. Petrov! He gave me this job when no one else would!"
Sophie gently pulled her head back from Alina's shoulder. She looked at Dmitri with her wide, serious brown eyes, her sweet voice breaking through the heavy tension.
"The man with the shiny watch touched the cup," Sophie said softly.
Dmitri froze. He dropped to one knee in front of the four-year-old girl, his stern expression tightening. "What did you say, little one?"
Sophie pointed her small finger toward the hallway outside the study. "When Mommy was getting the towels from the closet, a man with a big silver watch on his arm came out of the kitchen lift. He put a little spoon in the black cup and walked away real fast."
Dmitri’s chest heaved. He stood up smoothly, looking at the two remaining bodyguards standing at the study door.
Both guards wore standard black suits, but on the left wrist of the taller bodyguard glinted a massive, polished silver luxury watch.
The bodyguard’s eyes widened in sudden, naked terror as he realized the four-year-old girl had just identified him. He reached frantically for his shoulder holster.
"Traitor!" Dmitri roared.
Before the guard could clear his weapon, Dmitri drew his sidearm with blinding speed, firing two precise rounds. The silenced shots echoed softly through the high-ceilinged room, and the bodyguard collapsed backward onto the hardwood floor, motionless.
Alina gasped in horror, covering Sophie's eyes as she backed against the bookshelf.
Dmitri reloaded his weapon without flinching, stepping over the fallen guard. He looked at Alina and Sophie, his expression shifting from rage to a deep, solemn realization.

"Your daughter didn't just notice his breathing, Alina," Dmitri said, his voice quiet and gravelly. "She just saved your life. And she saved mine."
He pulled his radio back up to his lips. "Team Two, secure the Northwestern Memorial ICU. Alexei is alive, but the viper is inside our ranks."
