Chapter 7 - The Perimeter Protocol

By three o'clock in the morning, a heavy fog had rolled in off Lake Michigan, blanketing the grounds of the Petrov lakefront estate in a thick, white haze.
The mansion was placed under absolute executive lockdown. Heavy steel security shutters sealed every lower window, while thirty elite Petrov bodyguards dressed in dark tactical gear lined the stone perimeter walls, their high-powered rifles sweeping the mist with infrared beams.
Inside the grand study, Alexei stood behind his oak desk, reviewing tactical defense blueprints displayed on a digital tablet. He wore a fitted black tactical shirt, a heavy leather shoulder holster housing a custom sidearm, his broad frame radiating an aura of an invincible warlord preparing for war.
Alina walked into the study, holding Sophie's small hand. Alina wore a dark wool coat, her face pale but her expression filled with a quiet, fierce courage that mirrored Alexei's own resolve.
Sophie wore her pale-pink coat over her yellow princess dress, carrying her small pink toy medical kit like a precious treasure.
"Dmitri is preparing the armored convoy in the lower garage," Alina said softly, stepping up to the desk. "Are we leaving Chicago?"
Alexei looked up from the tablet, his dark blue-gray eyes softening as he looked at her. He walked around the desk, dropping to one knee before little Sophie.
"No, Alina," Alexei said gently. "We aren't running. But I am moving you and Sophie to the safehouse at the harbor docks until Lord Sterling's council is handled."
Sophie reached out her tiny hand, gently resting her fingers against Alexei's broad, stubbled cheek. "Are you going to fight the bad men, Uncle Alexei?"
Alexei’s chest tightened with a profound warmth as the little girl used the word Uncle for the first time. A genuine, radiant smile touched his rugged features.
"I am going to make sure the bad men never come back, little doctor," Alexei promised softly, kissing her small forehead.
Suddenly, a loud metallic crash echoed from the front driveway outside, followed by the deep rumble of three heavy armored vehicles breaching the outer wrought-iron gates.
Red alarm lights flared instantly across the study ceiling as heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the front lawn.
Dmitri burst into the study, his weapon drawn. "Boss! Sterling's advance strike team just bypassed the gate security! They're using military-grade frequency jammers!"
Alexei stood up smoothly, drawing his heavy tactical sidearm with blinding speed. His towering frame filled the room with terrifying authority.
"Dmitri, take Alina and Sophie through the subterranean passage to the boathouse!" Alexei ordered flatly. "Get them on the interceptor boat now!"
"Alexei, no!" Alina cried out, grabbing his broad forearm. "Come with us!"

Alexei looked into her dark, beautiful eyes, his hand covering hers on his arm with an iron, protective grip.
"I hold the front door, Alina," Alexei said, his deep voice shaking with absolute devotion. "Nobody touches my family."
