Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Codicil

The fire crackled softly in the stone grate, casting long, dramatic shadows across the master suite as Alina stared down at the yellowed parchment resting on the mahogany coffee table.
Her breath caught violently in her throat. "Nikolai...? No... no, that's impossible! My husband's name was David Reva! He was an accountant for a logistics firm in Chicago!"
"David Reva was an alias, Alina," Alexei said, his gravelly voice filled with solemn authority. "Four years ago, my younger brother Nikolai went into hiding after our father was assassinated in Europe. He changed his identity, moved to Chicago, and took a quiet job to keep his new family safe from the syndicate wars."
Alina fell back against the velvet sofa, her fair skin draining of all color as tears welling in her dark eyes spilled down her cheeks. "David... David was your brother?"
"Yes," Alexei whispered, leaning closer and taking both her trembling hands into his broad palms. "Which means Sophie isn't just a child living in this house, Alina. She is my biological niece. She carries the pure, unadulterated bloodline of the Petrov family."
Dmitri stepped forward, pointing to the bottom paragraph of the Swiss document. "And under Section Four of the international Petrov trust, because Nikolai passed away three years ago, fifty percent of the global shipping terminals and the family foundation automatically transfer to his direct legal heir."
Alina looked over at four-year-old Sophie, who was sleeping peacefully under her fleece blanket, holding her pink toy stethoscope.
"My little girl..." Alina wept softly, her chest heaving as the sheer weight of the truth washed over her. "All this time... I thought we were alone in the world."
Alexei stood up from his chair, his tall, broad frame looming over the room, radiating a fierce, protective aura that felt as solid as granite.
"You were never alone, Alina," Alexei said, his blue-gray eyes burning with absolute, lethal resolve. "My brother died protecting you. And I will burn all of Chicago to the ground before I let anyone harm his daughter."
Suddenly, the private satellite phone on Alexei's desk began to chime with a sharp, encrypted ringtone.
Alexei walked over to the desk, picking up the device and pressing speaker.
A smooth, unfamiliar voice carrying a heavy European accent spoke through the speaker:
"Mr. Petrov... congratulations on surviving Moretti's poison. But the international board in London has just received notification that Nikolai's daughter has been located in your lakefront estate."
Alexei’s jaw set like iron. "Who is this?"
"I am Lord Sterling," the voice replied smoothly. "Chief trustee of the European Syndicate Council. Under international charter, a four-year-old child cannot hold voting stock without a appointed legal guardian from the council. We are sending an executive team to Chicago to assume custody of Nikolai's daughter."

Alexei’s eyes turned into razor-sharp slits of liquid nitrogen. He leaned over the desk, his deep voice carrying a cold, terrifying authority that shook the quiet suite.
"Listen to me very carefully, Sterling," Alexei growled softly. "If any man from your council steps foot in Chicago... they don't leave alive."
