Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Dawn

Two weeks later, the dark clouds over Chicago cleared, giving way to a brilliant, crisp golden morning over Lake Michigan.
The treason inside the Moretti Syndicate had been completely purged. Anthony Vance’s illegal offshore assets were seized and legally transferred into a secure educational trust fund created for seven-year-old Mia Bennett.
At The Velvet Rose, the atmosphere was peaceful once again. The restaurant had been acquired by a new management group under the Moretti family's legal foundation.
In the quiet, elevated corner of the dining room at Table Eleven, Vincent sat enjoying an afternoon espresso. He wore a crisp beige wool coat over his black three-piece suit, his dark curly hair neatly styled back, his piercing blue eyes watching the entrance.
The heavy glass doors opened.
Claire entered the restaurant, looking radiant and confident. She wore an elegant navy silk dress that complemented her long brown hair, which cascaded over her shoulders in soft waves. Beside her, Mia skipped happily in a fresh cream floral dress, holding her brand-new dark blue teddy bear.
Mia ran across the marble floor, sliding into the plush leather booth right beside Vincent.
"Uncle Vincent!" Mia cheered, hugging his broad arm tightly. "Look! My bear has a bow tie just like yours!"
Vincent let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound that made the restaurant staff smile—and gently patted the little girl’s head. "He looks very sharp, Mia."
Claire sat down across from them, setting a small leather folder on the white tablecloth. "The foundation documents were finalized this morning, Vincent. The scholarship fund in Gabriel’s name is officially open."
"Good," Vincent said, taking a sip of his espresso. "My brother would be proud of you, Claire. You’ve given this city something beautiful."
Claire looked across the table at the feared Chicago boss, her brown eyes filled with deep, unspoken gratitude. "You gave us a home, Vincent. You gave Mia a family."
"You were always family, Claire," Vincent replied softly, his blue eyes holding hers with quiet warmth. "As long as I am breathing, you and Mia will never walk alone again."
A young waiter approached Table Eleven respectfully, carrying a silver tray. Resting on the polished metal was a single, sealed black envelope stamped with a distinct red wax seal.
"Excuse me, Mr. Moretti," the waiter said politely. "A courier just dropped this off at the front desk for you."
Vincent brow furrowed slightly. He picked up the black envelope and broke the heavy red wax seal with his thumb.
Inside was a single train ticket from Boston to Chicago... and a small, folded piece of paper written in a familiar, sweeping handwriting:
Save a seat for me at Table Eleven, big brother. See you tonight. - G.
Vincent stared at the dark ink on the paper. His heart gave a heavy, powerful thud against his ribs.
Claire noticed his sudden stillness. "Vincent? What is it?"
Vincent slowly turned his gaze toward the grand glass entrance of the restaurant, where the golden autumn sun was shining brightly over the city streets. A slow, knowing, dangerous smile touched the corners of his bearded lips.

He carefully slid the letter into his inner suit pocket, right beside his dark red pocket square, and looked back at Claire and Mia with absolute, unbroken resolve.
"Everything is going to be just fine, Claire," Vincent said, his voice smooth as silk and strong as iron. "Our family is just getting started."
