Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary on the Hill

The rain poured heavily as the three-vehicle Moretti convoy tore through the Gold Coast district, arriving at the massive wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate. Perched on a manicured hill overlooking Lake Michigan, the stone mansion stood like an impenetrable fortress, surrounded by stone walls and armed security patrols.

The heavy armored SUV pulled into the subterranean garage. Marco opened the rear door, offering his hand to Claire and Mia.

Mia gasped softly as she stepped out onto the polished concrete floor. The garage was filled with sleek black luxury vehicles, but what caught her attention was the grand marble staircase leading up into the main foyer.

Vincent stepped out of the lead sedan, unbuttoning his black suit jacket. "Marco, lock down the gate. Double the perimeter guards on the north wing."

"Understood, Boss," Marco replied, stepping away to issue orders into his earpiece.

Vincent led Claire and Mia up the grand staircase into the primary living room. High ceilings, mahogany wood paneling, and a roaring marble fireplace gave the space an overwhelming sense of ancient wealth and absolute security.

A middle-aged housekeeper in a neat grey dress approached respectfully. "Welcome home, Mr. Moretti. Shall I prepare the guest suites?"

"Prepare the master guest wing on the second floor," Vincent instructed. "Have the kitchen send up hot soup, roasted chicken, and fresh fruit immediately."

"Yes, sir."

Claire stood near the center of the plush rug, holding her fraying shoulder bag tightly against her faded floral dress. Despite the warmth of the room, she looked uncomfortable, almost defensive.

"Vincent," Claire spoke up, using his name for the first time. "We can't stay here long. I appreciate the dinner, but I don't want Mia raised in... in this world."

Vincent walked over to the fireplace, leaning one arm against the carved mantelpiece. He turned his head to look at her, his dark hair catching the warm firelight.

"You think I want to drag a seven-year-old child into mafia politics, Claire?" Vincent asked, his deep voice calm and resonant. "Seven years ago, my brother died because he kept secrets. He thought hiding you in Indiana would keep you safe, but all it did was leave you defenseless when he was gone."

Claire lowered her head, tears pricking her eyes. "I raised her fine for seven years—"

"You were evicted yesterday, Claire," Vincent said gently, stepping closer to her. "You were forced to ask a dismissive hostess for a bowl of leftover pasta tonight. You don't have to carry the world on your shoulders anymore. Gabriel was my brother. That makes Mia my family."

Mia walked over to a small glass display case near the fireplace, staring curiously at an old framed photograph resting inside. It showed two teenage boys in boxing gear, their arms thrown over each other's shoulders, laughing under the sun.

"Is that my daddy?" Mia asked softly, pointing her small finger at the younger boy in the photo.

Vincent dropped to one knee beside the little girl. He looked at the photograph, his blue eyes softening. "Yes, Mia. That was your father when he was sixteen years old. He was the fastest boxer in Chicago."

Mia smiled, her fair, rosy cheeks dimpling. "He looks like you."

"He was smarter than me," Vincent said with a faint smile. He stood up and looked at Marco, who had just re-entered the study holding a secure digital tablet.

"Boss," Marco said, his face grave. "I ran the background audit you requested on Claire’s rental history over the last seven years."

"What did you find?" Vincent asked.

Marco pulled up a spreadsheet on the screen. "It’s not random bad luck, Boss. Claire was evicted from four different apartments in Indiana and Illinois over the last three years. Every time she secured a steady job, the building owners received anonymous cash payments to terminate her lease and fire her."

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "What? Why would anyone do that?"

Vincent’s blue eyes turned to shards of ice. "Someone was deliberately keeping you in poverty, Claire. Someone wanted you desperate, vulnerable, and easy to control."

May you like

"Who funded the payments?" Vincent demanded of Marco.

Marco fumbled with the tablet, swallowing hard before answering. "The cash transfers were funneled through a shell company registered in downtown Chicago... using an internal account from the Moretti Syndicate."
