Chapter 17 - Whispers from the dead

Vincent carried the olive-drab footlocker back to the SUV, sliding it into the rear cargo area before climbing into the passenger seat. The rain was drumming relentlessly against the reinforced roof.

"Did you find it?" Frank asked, shifting the car into gear and pulling away from the river docks.

"I found everything," Vincent replied, his tone so low and lethal that even Frank hesitated to ask for details. "Drive to the safehouse on 31st Street. The old brewery."

As the vehicle slipped through the deserted industrial streets, Vincent opened the footlocker and took out the cassette recorder. He pressed the mechanical *PLAY* button.

The tape hissed for a couple of seconds before a familiar voice filled the quiet interior of the car—deep, gravelly, and unmistakably Marco Delgado’s.

Alina gasped, pressing her hands over her mouth as tears spilled down her cheeks. Mia sat up in her seat, her eyes widening as the voice of her dead father echoed through the speakers.

*"If you're listening to this, Vincent,"* Marco's voice spoke from beyond the grave, *"it means I’m already dead, and you’ve finally unlocked locker 408."*

The recording paused, filled only by the background noise of rain and distant harbor horns.

*"I owe you an apology, Boss. I lied to you. I didn't take the driver job because I needed the work. I took it because my federal handlers ordered me to find the leak inside your Commission. But the deeper I went, the more I realized that the real monsters weren't wearing expensive Italian suits in Chicago. They were sitting in federal offices in Washington and luxury penthouses in Atlanta."*

Marco took a ragged breath on the tape.

*"The Bishop isn't just an old mobster clinging to his glory days, Vincent. He’s the operational head of the Black Orchard. They use the Commission's shipping routes to move stolen assets, weapons, and collateral people across borders. When Don Valetti refused to let them traffic through Chicago's ports, Rossi and District Attorney Vance had Valetti murdered. And they framed it as an internal hit."*

Alina was openly sobbing now, leaning her head against the window. Frank’s jaw was clenched so hard a tendon in his cheek looked ready to snap.

*"The journals in this box contain every bank account, every corrupt judge, and every port manifest signed by Rossi and Vance,"* Marco’s voice continued, growing softer, more personal. *"Vincent, I know what you are. You’re a ruthless man. But you have a code. You don't target families, and you don't sell your soul to predators."*

Then, Marco’s voice cracked with deep, raw emotion.

*"If you're hearing this, Alina and Mia are alone in this world. Protect them, Vincent. Not because of me. But because Mia is the only witness who saw Rossi hand the execution order to the man who killed Valetti. She was three years old, sitting in the back of my car outside St. Michael’s church. She saw his face. And Rossi knows it."*

The tape ended with a sharp click.

Silence descended upon the vehicle, broken only by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers.

Vincent slowly turned his head to look at Mia. The little girl was holding her wooden truck in her lap, looking up at Vincent with innocent, untroubled eyes.

"The tall man with the silver stick," Mia whispered into the darkness. "He gave a red envelope to the bad man."

Vincent reached out, gently brushing a lock of hair from Mia’s forehead. "Nobody will ever hurt you again, Mia. That is my promise."

He turned back to Frank, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Call the captains. All of them. We aren't going to hide in a safehouse."

"What are we doing, Boss?" Frank asked, his eyes gleaming.

"We’re going to the federal courthouse," Vincent said. "We’re going to burn this entire empire to the ground."
