Chapter 8 - The Gathering of Shadows

Sunday evening arrived under a blanket of heavy, oppressive storm clouds.
The grand dining hall of the Marchetti mansion was transformed into an official syndicate council room. At the head of the massive mahogany table sat Don Carmine and Don Salvatore, flanked by four senior lieutenants from the Chicago syndicate.
Julian Marchetti sat on the right side of the table, flanked by two expensive defense lawyers in tailored suits. He looked relaxed, almost smug, swirling a glass of sparkling water between his fingers.
Vincent sat at the far end of the table, his broad shoulders filling out his black three-piece suit, his signature black hat resting on the table beside him. Dominic stood silently behind his chair, his arms crossed over his chest.
"We are here to settle the dispute of leadership," Don Carmine announced, his raspy voice echoing through the vast room. "Julian Marchetti has formally challenged his brother Vincent's authority, citing security failures and reckless accusations against senior personnel."
Julian stood up smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "Gentlemen of the Commission. Last Thursday, an explosive device was found beneath my brother's car. Instead of conducting a proper forensic investigation, my brother arrested Frank Caruso based on the nonsensical claims of a maid's toddler. He has locked down this estate, threatened my private staff, and displayed severe paranoia unfitting for a boss of Chicago."
Don Salvatore nodded slowly. "Vincent. How do you respond?"
Vincent slowly raised his head, his blue eyes locking onto Julian with calm, predatory focus.
"I didn't arrest Frank Caruso based on a toddler's nursery rhyme, Julian," Vincent said softly. "I arrested Frank because he was set up by you."
Julian let out a loud, mocking laugh. "Set up by me? I was in Manhattan! I have flight receipts, hotel logs—"
"You flew into Chicago on a private jet under a fake tail number at nine o'clock Wednesday night," Vincent interrupted smoothly. "You entered the lower motor pool at 11:42 PM using your personal keycard. You stole Frank's spare cuff link from his locker, attached the tracking device beneath my SUV, and dropped the cuff link in the gravel to make it look like Frank was selling me out."
Julian’s face flushed red with anger. "Absurd! You have zero proof of any of this! Where are the logs? Where is the physical evidence?"
Vincent gestured to Dominic.
Dominic walked to the double doors, opening them wide.
Alina walked into the dining hall, holding little Mia by the hand. Mia was wearing her cream floral dress and holding her wooden toy truck tightly under her arm.
Julian sneered, shaking his head. "Is this your grand evidence, Vincent? Bringing a maid and a baby into a Commission council meeting? This is an insult to Don Carmine and the entire table!"
"Silence, Julian!" Don Carmine snapped, hitting his cane against the floor. "Let Vincent speak!"
Vincent stood up, his massive frame towering over the entire table. He walked over to Mia, crouching down gently to take the wooden toy truck from her hands.
"Two years ago," Vincent said, turning back to face the Commission, "a loyal worker named Marco Ruiz died in a warehouse fire on the south side. The police called it an accident. But Marco knew he was going to be murdered."
Vincent set the toy truck in the middle of the polished mahogany table, right in front of Don Carmine.

With a swift, practiced movement, Vincent pressed the hidden spring inside the wood. The bottom panel slid open, revealing the black micro-memory card.
Julian’s face went dead white. The smug arrogance vanished instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror.
