Chapter 2 - The golden cage

The silence in the study was suffocating. Adrian casually dropped the brass key into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, folding the cream envelope and sliding it beneath a leather-bound ledger on his desk. He moved with a frighteningly calm fluidity, betraying none of the adrenaline surging through his veins. He looked at the shadow on the rug, waiting.

Good morning, darling, Victoria’s voice floated into the room before she stepped through the doorway. She was breathtaking, a woman who wore her extreme wealth like a weapon. Her fair, flawless skin was complemented by her silk morning gown, and her smile was practiced and entirely devoid of warmth. Her eyes darted around the study, landing immediately on Lily.

Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, resting his hands on the desk. Just checking the morning markets, Victoria, he said smoothly. His American accent was refined, masking the gritty, violent history of the Moretti bloodline.

Victoria walked gracefully toward the desk, her heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor. She looked down at the four-year-old girl in the light-blue princess dress. Well, who is this little darling? Did one of the staff bring their child to work? Victoria reached out, intending to stroke Lily’s light-brown curls.

Lily flinched violently, stepping backward and hiding completely behind Adrian’s heavy leather chair. The child buried her face into the soft fur of her stuffed bunny, her small shoulders shaking.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He stood up, his tall, broad-shouldered frame easily dominating the room. She is a family friend's daughter, Adrian lied flawlessly. She will be staying with us for a few days. I expect the staff to prepare the south guest suite for her.

Victoria’s practiced smile faltered for a fraction of a second. The south suite? Darling, that’s right next to the master wing. Surely the nursery in the staff quarters would be more appropriate for a... temporary guest.

Adrian walked around the desk, stopping mere inches from Victoria. His dark eyes locked onto hers with an intimidating, absolute authority. The south suite, Victoria. See to it personally.

Victoria swallowed hard, recognizing the tone that commanded an empire. Of course, Adrian, she murmured, turning on her heel and leaving the study.

Once she was gone, Adrian knelt down beside the chair. He reached out, gently placing his large hand on Lily’s trembling shoulder. It’s okay, he whispered softly. You are safe here. But as he looked at the child’s fair skin and the specific shade of her light-brown hair, a haunting realization began to take root in his mind. She looked exactly like his late brother, Julian.

His phone vibrated in his pocket. It was a secure text from Maya. The blue tag on the brass key. I ran the serial number. It doesn't belong to a bank. It belongs to a private, off-the-books medical archive in upstate New York. Claire wasn't hiding money. She was hiding records.

Adrian stared at the message. Why would Claire, the woman who had fled the criminal underworld years ago, leave her daughter with a key to a medical archive? And why was Maya so terrified that Victoria would find out? The golden cage of his Manhattan mansion suddenly felt like a trap, and the four-year-old girl clutching her bunny was the bait.
