Chapter 4 - The shadow in the archive

The private medical archive in upstate New York was a massive, brutalist concrete structure hidden deep within a forested valley. It looked less like a storage facility and more like a fortress. Adrian arrived under the cover of darkness, leaving Lily safely guarded at the Hudson Valley estate. He wore a dark overcoat over his tailored suit, his breath pluming in the cold night air as he approached the heavily secured steel doors.
He bypassed the front desk using his immense wealth and a few terrifying words, descending into the subterranean levels. The air down here smelled of dust and old paper. He navigated the labyrinth of metal cages until he reached Unit 404. He pulled the brass key from his pocket. It fit perfectly into the heavy padlock. The lock clicked open with a heavy, satisfying thud.
Adrian pulled the rolling metal door upward, the harsh fluorescent lights from the hallway illuminating the small, windowless room. It was not a storage unit; it was a makeshift office. Corkboards lined the walls, connected by red string, pinning together news clippings, financial ledgers, and photographs of the Moretti and Victoria’s families. Claire had been living a ghost's life, dedicating every waking moment to unraveling a massive conspiracy.
Adrian stepped inside, his dark eyes scanning the chaotic room. On a small metal desk in the center lay a thick, medical folder. He walked over, his gloved hands carefully opening the cover.
Inside was a birth certificate. Lily Grace Moretti. Mother: Claire Reynolds. Father: Julian Moretti. But it wasn't the birth certificate that made Adrian’s blood run cold. It was the autopsy report tucked beneath it. An autopsy report for his brother, Julian, completely unredacted.
Adrian read the medical examiner's true findings, words that had been scrubbed from the official police report five years ago. Julian had not died from the impact of the crash. He had been paralyzed by a highly sophisticated, untraceable paralytic toxin before the car ever left the road. He had been murdered.
A sudden, sharp metallic scraping sound echoed from the hallway outside.
Adrian dropped the file on the desk, his hand instinctively reaching into his overcoat for the cold steel of his suppressed pistol. He killed the lights in the unit, plunging the room into total darkness. He pressed his broad back against the cold concrete wall, his breathing completely silent, his terrifying masculine presence coiling like a predator in the dark.
Footsteps approached. Slow. Deliberate.
The beam of a high-powered flashlight pierced the darkness of the unit, sweeping across the corkboards. A man dressed in tactical black gear stepped into the room, his weapon drawn. He was one of Victoria's syndicate mercenaries, sent to erase whatever Claire had hidden.
Adrian did not hesitate. He moved with blinding speed, a phantom in the dark. He grabbed the mercenary's weapon hand, twisting it violently until the gun dropped to the floor, and drove his knee into the man's chest. The mercenary collapsed, gasping for air. Adrian dragged him into the light of the hallway, pinning him to the concrete floor, his handsome face twisted in absolute, lethal rage.
Who sent you? Adrian demanded, his voice a low, gravelly whisper.
May you like
The mercenary coughed, blood staining his teeth. You're too late, Moretti. She's not looking for the papers. She's looking for the child.
Adrian’s heart stopped. Victoria hadn't sent her men here to find the evidence; she had sent a decoy to draw him away from the Hudson Valley estate. She was going after Lily.
