Chapter 5 - The shattered sanctuary

Adrian drove the armored SUV back toward the Hudson Valley estate at terrifying speeds, the massive engine roaring through the quiet, winding mountain roads. He had Maya on the encrypted speakerphone, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white.

Maya, lock down the estate! Adrian barked, his calm demeanor entirely shattered by the desperate need to protect the innocent child. Initiate the alpha protocol. No one gets in or out.

I'm trying, Adrian, Maya’s voice crackled with panic. But the internal security system has been compromised. The perimeter guards aren't responding. Victoria’s family must have bought out the night shift. We are entirely blind.

Get a weapon and get to Lily, Adrian ordered, killing the connection.

He arrived at the massive iron gates of the estate to find them swinging wide open in the wind. The guardhouse was empty. Adrian drew his weapon, abandoning the vehicle on the driveway and sprinting toward the grand front doors of the mansion. The silence of the estate was unnatural, heavy with the threat of violence.

He moved methodically through the opulent halls, his tailored suit blending into the velvet shadows of the house. He found two of his loyal enforcers unconscious on the marble floor of the west wing, struck from behind. Victoria had planned a surgical strike, bypassing the heavy artillery to quietly extract the child.

Adrian reached the garden solarium. The heavy glass doors were shattered, crystal fragments glittering on the stone floor under the moonlight.

Lily! Adrian yelled, the raw emotion in his voice echoing through the empty room.

He stepped through the broken glass, his eyes scanning the overturned chairs and ruined exotic plants. Near the center fountain, he saw Maya kneeling on the ground, holding her bleeding shoulder. She had been grazed by a suppressed bullet, her fair skin pale and sweaty.

Maya looked up at him, tears of frustration in her eyes. I tried, Adrian. They were professionals. They moved like ghosts.

Where is she? Adrian demanded, kneeling beside her, pressing a cloth to her wound.

They took her, Maya whispered, her voice trembling. But Adrian... Lily fought back. She bit one of the men. When she struggled, she dropped this.

Maya reached into her coat pocket with her good hand and pulled out the cream-colored stuffed bunny. The plush toy was dirty, and the delicate blue ribbon around its neck was torn. Adrian took the bunny, staring at the innocent object. The mafia boss, a man who had commanded thousands and built an empire of fear, felt a profound, devastating helplessness. They had taken his brother's daughter.

As Adrian gripped the bunny, his large fingers felt something hard hidden deep within the plush stuffing of the toy's stomach. He frowned, his intense eyes narrowing. He pulled a pocket knife from his suit and carefully sliced open the seam of the bunny.

Buried inside the synthetic cotton was a small, black micro-SD card. Claire hadn't just left a key. She had sent the most damning evidence right into his hands, hidden inside the only thing Lily refused to let go of. The child wasn't just an heir; she was a courier.
