Chapter 1 - The mimic in the marble hall

The air inside the Falcone estate was always heavy, thick with the kind of silence that only unimaginable wealth and deeply buried sins could buy. The grand corridor stretched out like a cinematic masterpiece, lined with black-and-white marble floors that reflected the warm, golden light of the crystal chandeliers hanging above. Gold wall sconces illuminated the tall arches and framed oil paintings, casting long, velvet shadows across the opulent space.
Dante Falcone walked down the center of the hallway. He was a man who commanded gravity itself. In his late thirties, the mafia boss was terrifyingly handsome, his tall, heavily muscular frame wrapped in a fitted black shirt with an open collar that revealed the dark ink of chest tattoos. A tailored black vest and black trousers completed the look of a man who ruled a violent underworld with absolute, emotionally guarded control. His hands were clasped firmly behind his back, his dark styled hair perfect, his expression completely cold.
Several feet behind him, a tiny, entirely fearless shadow was following.
Sophia, three years old and utterly oblivious to the danger that Dante Falcone represented, was matching his terrifying stride perfectly. She wore a layered pink floral princess dress that rustled softly against the marble, her little pink shoes stepping exactly in time with his heavy boots. Her long, curly brown hair was tied back with a massive pink bow. She had her tiny hands clasped behind her back, her small face scrunched up into a hilarious imitation of his lethal, serious stare.
"He walks grumpy," Sophia whispered loudly, completely breaking the silence.
Rosa Bennett felt her heart drop into her stomach. In her mid-twenties, Rosa wore a classic black maid dress with white lace trim, a crisp white apron, and a delicate maid headpiece. She was Sophia’s caretaker, gentle and fiercely protective, and right now, she was entirely paralyzed with panic. She followed a few paces behind the child, her soft brunette features pale with horror.
Suddenly, Dante stopped dead in his tracks.
Sophia stopped too. She didn't flinch. She just stood there, still imitating him perfectly, her tiny hands locked behind her back. Rosa froze, her breath catching in her throat. In the background, two tall bodyguards in dark suits stood like statues, though one had to physically look away toward a floral arrangement to hide a genuine, breaking laugh.
Dante slowly turned around. The sheer intimidation radiating from him was suffocating. He stared down at the three-year-old girl in the pink dress. Rosa rushed forward a step, terrified that he might yell, but Dante raised one large, tattooed hand slightly. The micro-expression was clear. Silence.
"Why do you keep walking like me?" Dante asked, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that usually made grown men tremble.
Sophia looked up at him with innocent, serious eyes. She didn't break character. She stayed standing exactly like the most feared man in the city.
"Because you look lonely," Sophia stated.
Dante’s hard expression broke. It was a microscopic shift, but for the first time in years, the impenetrable wall around the mafia boss cracked. He glanced slowly down the long hallway toward a heavy, closed oak door in the forbidden east wing. Then, returning his gaze to the little girl, Dante Falcone let out a quiet, genuine laugh.
Rosa stared in absolute disbelief.

Before Rosa could step in, Sophia stepped closer to the towering man. She reached her tiny hands up. To Rosa's absolute horror, the child lightly touched Dante’s scarred cheek. Dante went completely still, his dark eyes fixed on her.
"The pretty lady in your locked room said you needed a hug," Sophia said softly.
