Chapter 9 - The ashes of the old world

The reunion in the locked room was brief, beautiful, and utterly heartbreaking. Rosa held her sister for the first time in eighteen years, sobbing into the white silk dress. Elena’s clarity was fragile, slipping back into confusion moments later, but the terror was gone. She finally understood that the ghost she feared was the sister she had sacrificed everything to save.

But the night was not over.

Dante tied Don Salieri to a heavy oak chair in the corner of the room. The old boss slowly regained consciousness, groaning in pain, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

Dante dragged a velvet chair over and sat directly in front of Salieri. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, projecting an aura of terrifying, absolute control.

"You brought the cartel into my city," Dante stated coldly. "You ordered an attack on my home. The high commission will execute you themselves when they find out."

Salieri spat blood onto the rug, grinning maliciously. "The commission won't execute me, Dante. They gave me the order. They want you gone. You are too powerful, too independent. Tonight was an officially sanctioned hit. If I don't walk out of here and confirm your death, the entire syndicate will descend on this estate. You can't fight a five-family war alone."

Dante’s sharp jawline tightened. He knew Salieri was telling the truth. The mafia was a machine, and it was turning against him.

Rosa stood near the grand piano, holding the sleeping Sophia in her arms. She looked at Dante. The impenetrable wall around the mafia boss was gone. For the first time, he looked trapped.

"What do we do?" Rosa asked quietly.

Dante stood up, turning to face her. "I have a private jet fueled and waiting at a secure airstrip upstate. My loyal men will escort you, Elena, and Sophia to it. There is an offshore account in your name, Rosa. It has enough money to keep you hidden and safe for the rest of your lives."

Rosa’s heart seized. "What about you?"

"I am the head of the Falcone family," Dante said, his voice heavy with finality. "I cannot run. If I leave, they will hunt you forever. I stay here. I hold the estate. I make sure Salieri and the commission bleed enough to forget you exist."

"No," Rosa said, stepping toward him, her voice fierce. "You are not staying here to die. You are her father. Sophia needs you. Elena needs you."

Dante closed the distance between them. He gently placed his hands on Rosa’s shoulders. His touch was incredibly warm against the cold dread in the room. He looked deeply into her eyes, his emotional guard completely stripped away.

"Elena needs a peaceful life, far away from this violence," Dante whispered softly. "I can never give her that. The poison broke our marriage long before it broke her mind. My duty was to protect her, and I failed. But I will not fail you, Rosa. I will not let you die in this house."

He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to Rosa’s forehead. It was a gesture of profound respect, of goodbye, and of an unspoken, tragic love that could never be explored.

"Take them," Dante commanded his two most trusted bodyguards, who had finally breached the hallway and entered the room.

Rosa was crying silently as the bodyguards gently placed Elena in a specialized transport wheelchair. Rosa held Sophia tight, looking back at Dante as she reached the door.

Dante stood in the center of the beautiful, locked sanctuary, his tailored black clothes ruined with blood, looking like a tragic king watching his kingdom fall.

"I will never forget you," Rosa whispered.

"Keep her safe," Dante replied, quoting the exact words from the drawing Sophia had slipped under the door.

The heavy oak door closed, locking Dante inside with the traitor.

Rosa, Elena, and Sophia were rushed through the hidden underground tunnels of the estate. The sounds of a renewed, massive gunfight echoed above them. The commission had arrived with reinforcements. The war for New York had truly begun.

They reached the armored SUVs waiting in the hidden garage. As they sped away into the dark, rainy night, Rosa looked back through the tinted windows. The massive Falcone estate was burning, flames licking the night sky, a funeral pyre for the man who had sacrificed everything for a family he could not keep.
