Chapter 6 - The bloodline secret

The dining hall went entirely silent. The air grew so thick with tension that it felt hard to breathe. Dante did not flinch. His dark eyes remained fixed on Don Salieri as he slowly set the wine bottle down on the table.

Up on the balcony, Rosa covered her mouth, her heart hammering against her ribs. She couldn't intervene. If she ran down there, she would only confirm Salieri's suspicions that the child had stolen something forbidden.

"She is the daughter of one of my house staff," Dante said smoothly, his voice a low, terrifying purr. He looked down at Sophia. "She is prone to stealing shiny things. Bring me the key, Sophia."

Sophia looked at Dante. She didn't sense the danger in the room. She just smiled her innocent, playful smile. She trotted over to the terrifying mafia boss, her pink floral dress swishing against the marble, and held up her tiny hand.

But instead of handing him the key, Sophia pointed directly at the heavy gold metal. "The pretty lady said it’s time to open the door."

Don Salieri’s eyes narrowed. He pushed his chair back, the screech of wood against marble echoing like a gunshot. "The pretty lady? Dante... you told the commission that your wife died five years ago. Have you been lying to us?"

The bodyguards lining the walls instinctively moved their hands toward their holstered weapons. The syndicate elders shifted in their seats. Lying to the high commission was an act of treason, punishable by total erasure of the bloodline.

Dante knelt down, effortlessly plucking the gold key from Sophia’s hand. He stood back up, towering over the table, his heavily muscular frame projecting absolute, lethal dominance.

"Are you accusing me of treason in my own house, Salieri?" Dante asked, his voice deadly calm.

"I am asking why a toddler is carrying the master key to a wing that has been sealed since your wife's funeral," Salieri countered, refusing to back down. "Rumors have been swirling, Dante. The Vargas cartel claims they didn't kill her. They claim you hid her away because she was pregnant with an heir. An heir you didn't want the commission to know about."

Rosa gasped from the balcony. An heir.

She looked at Sophia. The curly brown hair. The intense, serious eyes. Dante had told Rosa that Sophia brought light into the house, but he had never explained why he let a maid raise an orphan in the servant quarters of a mafia fortress.

Sophia wasn't just a random orphan Rosa found at the church. Elena had given Sophia to the priest before the poison took her mind. The priest had given Sophia to Rosa.

Sophia was Dante and Elena’s biological daughter.

Before Dante could respond to Salieri’s accusation, a massive explosion rocked the estate.

The heavy stained-glass windows of the dining hall shattered inward, spraying shards of colored glass across the mahogany table. The chandeliers flickered and died, plunging the opulent room into darkness, lit only by the emergency strobe lights.

"Vargas cartel!" one of Dante’s bodyguards screamed, drawing his weapon. "They’ve breached the perimeter!"

The dining hall erupted into absolute chaos. Automatic gunfire echoed through the mansion. Don Salieri and the elders scrambled for cover. Dante didn't care about the syndicate bosses. He moved with blinding, brutal speed, sweeping Sophia into his massive arms, shielding her tiny body with his broad back as bullets tore into the walls.

"Rosa!" Dante roared over the deafening gunfire, looking up at the balcony.

Rosa didn't hesitate. She threw off her maid apron and sprinted down the grand staircase, dodging the crossfire. She reached Dante just as a cartel mercenary breached the main doors. Dante raised his weapon with one hand, holding Sophia tight with the other, and fired a single, lethal shot, dropping the mercenary instantly.

"Take her!" Dante commanded, shoving the crying Sophia into Rosa’s arms. "Get to the east wing! The walls are reinforced steel. Go!"

Rosa grabbed the little girl, pressing her face into her shoulder, and ran. Dante stepped into the center of the hallway, a terrifying god of war, laying down a suppressing fire to cover their escape.

Rosa reached the east wing corridor. The power was out, the hallway lit only by the flashes of gunfire from the main house. She reached the heavy oak door. She fumbled in her pocket for the gold key Dante had shoved into her hand.

But as she reached the door, she stopped.

The heavy brass deadbolt was already unlocked. The door was slightly ajar.
