Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage in the Sky

The private jet was a cinematic masterpiece of modern luxury, soaring high above the clouds in the bright, clear afternoon sky. The interior was lined with cream-colored leather, polished dark wood, and silver accents that caught the sunlight pouring through the large windows.

Claire sat in a plush oversized seat, holding a cup of hot tea. She had changed into a comfortable but elegant tailored cream blouse and soft trousers. She looked out the window, her mind racing with anxiety. The rapid shift in her life was overwhelming. Just forty-eight hours ago, she was an anonymous event planner trying to make ends meet. Now, she was flying across the country in a multi-million-dollar aircraft, guarded by heavily armed men.

Across the aisle, Adrian sat at a polished wooden table, reviewing documents on a secure tablet. He wore his crisp black dress shirt, having finally removed his suit jacket. The tailored fabric stretched across his broad, muscular shoulders, highlighting his imposing build. He was a man of intense focus, yet Claire could feel his gray eyes frequently darting over to check on her.

In the center of the cabin, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Nora was having the time of her life. She had unpacked her tiny pink purse directly onto the expensive leather seats. She was happily lining up her crackers in a row, carefully instructing Marco on the proper way to host a snack party.

Marco, sitting stiffly in his black suit and earpiece, looked completely out of his depth. The disciplined security chief was trying his best to follow the four-year-old’s strict rules, awkwardly holding a tiny cracker in his large hand.

You have to eat it slow, Uncle Marco, Nora ordered, her bright blue eyes entirely serious. The king always eats slow.

I understand, Your Majesty, Marco replied, offering a rare, genuine smile as he took a painfully slow bite of the cracker.

Adrian lowered his tablet, watching the scene. The corners of his sharply masculine mouth twitched upward in a suppressed smile. The sound of Nora’s bright laughter filled the cabin, erasing the heavy tension that usually accompanied his syndicate business trips.

Claire watched Adrian watching Nora. The contrast was startling. He was a feared mafia boss, a man whose name made powerful politicians tremble, yet he allowed a little girl with a gold bow to completely disrupt his controlled environment.

Why are you doing all this? Claire asked softly, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the engines.

Adrian looked at her, his intense gray eyes locking onto hers. The amusement vanished, replaced by a deep, sincere gravity.

She is a Cole, Adrian said simply. She carries my family’s blood. In my world, blood is the only thing that matters.

But you didn't know she existed until yesterday, Claire pointed out, her delicate features tense. You don't owe us anything. James made his choices.

Adrian set his tablet down and leaned forward, resting his powerful forearms on his knees. My brother abandoned his responsibilities. He abandoned you. I do not tolerate cowards in my family. I am bringing him back to answer for what he did, and I am ensuring that Nora has the protection and the life she deserves.

He paused, his gaze softening slightly as he looked at Claire’s fair, rosy skin. And I am ensuring that the woman who raised my niece alone, with nothing but courage, is never forced to be afraid again.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat. The raw, unfiltered protection in his words was overwhelming. She looked down at her hands, trying to suppress the sudden, intense warmth spreading through her chest.

The jet began its descent into Las Vegas. The bright, neon-lit skyline emerged from the desert, a glittering mirage of wealth and secrets. Adrian’s security team immediately shifted into high gear, their expressions returning to disciplined focus.

When they landed, a fleet of black armored SUVs was waiting on the private tarmac. Adrian escorted Claire and Nora to the lead vehicle, his hand hovering protectively near the small of Claire’s back without actually touching her.

They arrived at a sprawling, ultra-luxurious penthouse atop the city’s most exclusive hotel. The suite featured floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the bright strip below.

Marco began securing the perimeter, checking the cameras and locking the private elevator.

Adrian stood by the glass, looking out over the city. His intense presence filled the room. We have teams sweeping the casinos, Adrian announced. If James is still in this city, we will have him by midnight.

Claire stood next to him, looking at the glittering lights. What happens when we find him? she asked, her voice trembling with dread.

Adrian turned to her, his gray eyes cold and absolute. We ask him why he left. And then, I make sure he can never run again.
