Chapter 7 - The Calm Before the Storm

The return flight to the East Coast was vastly different from the frantic journey to Las Vegas. The heavy, cinematic tension that had filled the private jet was replaced by a profound, exhausted peace.
Claire sat by the large window, watching the bright blue sky stretch out infinitely above the clouds. The legal documents had been signed. James was officially erased from their lives, left with nothing but his own cowardly choices. Claire felt a strange, terrifying freedom.
Nora was fast asleep on the plush cream leather seat across the aisle, completely worn out from the excitement of the trip. Her tiny hands were still loosely gripping her pink purse, the large gold bow slightly askew in her curly light-brown hair.
Adrian sat opposite Claire, his tablet resting on the polished wooden table. He was no longer reviewing syndicate documents. He was simply watching Claire. His intense gray eyes traced the delicate, feminine lines of her profile, observing the way the sunlight caught her fair, rosy skin. The cold, controlled mafia boss had fundamentally changed over the past seventy-two hours. He had found a family he never knew he wanted.
How are you feeling? Adrian asked, his deep, masculine voice breaking the quiet hum of the jet engines.
Claire turned from the window, offering a soft, genuine smile. Lighter, she admitted. It hurts to know he didn't care, but it hurts less than not knowing at all. I finally know the truth.
Adrian leaned forward, resting his muscular forearms on the table. You are incredibly strong, Claire. Most people would have let that revelation break them. You faced him with absolute dignity.
Claire looked down, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. I had to be strong. I have Nora to think about.
Adrian’s gaze softened as he looked over at the sleeping child. She will never have to worry about anything ever again. She is a Cole. She carries my protection now, unconditionally.
And me? Claire asked, her voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. She looked up into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Adrian didn't hesitate. He reached across the table, his large, warm hand gently covering hers. You carry my protection, too. For as long as you want it.
The spark between them ignited into a steady, burning flame. It was an unspoken promise, a deep, mutual understanding that they had crossed a threshold together. They were no longer just a mafia boss and his brother’s widow; they were partners bound by shared fierce loyalty to a little girl.
They arrived back at the luxurious estate by late afternoon. The bright, warm sunlight washed over the manicured gardens and the grand marble foyer. It felt like coming home.
The next few weeks fell into a beautiful, unexpected routine. Adrian, despite running a massive, powerful syndicate, made sure he was present for breakfast every morning. He sat at the head of the long dining table, dressed in his flawless black suits, allowing Nora to dictate the rules of the morning.
Marco and the other bodyguards grew accustomed to the new dynamic. The estate, once a cold fortress of power, was now filled with the sound of a four-year-old’s laughter and the warm, bright presence of Claire.
One evening, Adrian was hosting a private dinner for several high-ranking syndicate elders in the estate’s grand dining room. Claire had been managing the event, utilizing the job Marco had originally gotten her to ensure everything ran perfectly. She wore a stunning, understated champagne-colored gown that highlighted her delicate features.
The elders, older men with scarred faces and ruthless reputations, noticed the way Adrian looked at her.
She is a beautiful woman, Adrian, one of the elders noted, swirling his expensive cognac. But is it wise to bring an outsider so close to the center of the family? Especially one connected to James?
Adrian’s sharply masculine features hardened instantly. The relaxed, accommodating host vanished, replaced by the terrifying boss who demanded absolute respect.
Claire is not an outsider, Adrian stated, his voice a low, lethal rumble that commanded immediate silence in the room. She is the mother of my niece. She is under my direct protection. Anyone who questions her place in this house is questioning my judgment.
The elders exchanged quick, nervous glances and immediately bowed their heads in deference. No disrespect intended, boss, the elder murmured quickly.
Claire, standing near the doorway, heard the exchange. A warm, profound sense of safety washed over her. She knew that in Adrian’s world, loyalty was absolute.
Later that night, after the guests had left, Adrian found Claire on the outdoor terrace. The night air was warm, the stars shining brightly over the estate.
You didn't have to defend me like that, Claire said softly as he approached.
Adrian stood beside her, his powerful presence a comforting weight in the dark. I will always defend you, Claire. You are the best thing that has ever happened to this family.
He turned to face her, looking down into her expressive blue-gray eyes. The distance between them had been closing for weeks, but tonight, the pull was irresistible. Adrian reached up, his hand gently cupping her soft cheek. He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a slow, deep, profoundly passionate kiss.
Claire melted against him, her hands resting on his broad, muscular chest. It was a kiss that promised a future, a kiss that sealed the bond they had forged.

But as they stood in the cinematic moonlight, Marco stepped onto the terrace. His disciplined expression was completely shattered.
Boss, Marco said, his voice tense with urgency. We have a major problem. James didn't just sign the papers and walk away in Vegas. He sold us out.
