Chapter 6 - The Broken Illusion

The silence in the high-limit room was absolute. The few other wealthy patrons in the room quickly gathered their chips and hurried out, sensing the impending, invisible violence radiating from Adrian. Marco and the bodyguards seamlessly blocked the only exit, their disciplined expressions betraying no emotion.

James stared at Adrian, completely paralyzed with fear. He looked frantically toward the exit, but the wall of black suits offered no escape. His eyes darted back to his brother, and then, slowly, they shifted to the woman standing just behind Adrian’s broad shoulder.

Claire.

James’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked at her delicate features, her beautiful light-brown hair, and the profound, devastating heartbreak in her expressive blue-gray eyes.

Claire? James choked out, his voice cracking. How... how did you find me?

We didn't, Adrian answered, stepping slightly to the side so Claire could fully face her husband, though Adrian remained close enough to shield her instantly if necessary. You left a trail of breadcrumbs, James. You stole from the family accounts before you faked your death. You used our father’s money to build a new life, and you left the woman who loved you to starve in a studio apartment.

James raised his hands defensively, his fair skin slick with sweat. Adrian, you don't understand. Dad was going to kill me! He found out I was skimming off the top of the shipping manifest. I had to run! I faked the crash so he wouldn't come after me!

And what was your excuse a year ago? Claire asked, her voice shaking with raw, unfiltered emotion. Your father was already dead, James. Nobody was looking for you. You were safe. We were safe. Why did you leave us?

James looked at Claire, unable to hold her gaze. He looked down at the expensive carpet. I... I couldn't handle it anymore, Claire. The quiet life. The hiding. The crying baby. It wasn't me. I am a Cole. I deserve to live like this. He gestured weakly to the opulent casino room and the frightened blonde woman cowering behind him.

Claire felt a hot, burning tear slip down her rosy cheek. She had spent a year agonizing over his disappearance, assuming he had been kidnapped or murdered protecting them. To hear him admit that he simply got bored of being a father was a psychological blow far worse than grief.

You abandoned Nora because she was an inconvenience to your lifestyle, Claire whispered, her voice hardening with newfound strength.

Adrian’s intense gray eyes burned with a lethal, quiet fury. He looked at his brother with absolute disgust. You are a coward, James. You disgraced our family name. You abandoned your blood.

James straightened up, trying to muster a fraction of the Cole arrogance. What are you going to do, Adrian? Kill me in a crowded casino? I have friends here. I have protection.

Adrian let out a short, cold laugh. It was a terrifying sound. Protection? You think these casino bosses care about a dead man? I own the people who own this city, James. You have absolutely nothing.

Adrian took a slow step forward, his tall, muscular frame towering over his younger brother. I am reclaiming the money you stole from our father. Every cent. But I am not going to kill you, James. Killing you would be a mercy.

James swallowed hard, his eyes wide. Then what do you want?

I want you to sign away every right you have to Nora, Adrian commanded, his voice vibrating with absolute authority. You will legally sever your ties to Claire. You will never contact them again. You will walk out of this casino with the clothes on your back, and you will disappear forever. If I ever see your face again, if you ever breathe Claire’s name, I will slowly dismantle whatever pathetic life you manage to build.

James looked at Adrian, then at Claire. He didn't argue. He didn't beg for forgiveness. He simply nodded, his cowardice shining brightly under the chandelier lights. I’ll sign whatever you want. Just let me go.

Claire turned away, unable to look at him any longer. The illusion of the man she had loved was completely shattered, leaving behind nothing but dust.

Adrian placed a warm, heavy hand on Claire’s delicate shoulder, pulling her gently against his side. It’s over, he whispered, his voice incredibly soft, meant only for her.

He looked back at Marco. Get the paperwork signed. Strip his accounts. Leave him with nothing.

May you like

Marco nodded sharply. Yes, boss.

Adrian escorted Claire out of the high-limit room, his arm wrapped firmly and protectively around her waist. They walked through the bright, noisy casino floor, completely insulated in their own silent world. The heavy burden of the past four years had finally been lifted off Claire’s shoulders, and the man walking beside her was the one who had set her free.
