Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate was a blinding sea of wealth and privilege. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the towering marble columns and tables draped in white silk. The city’s elite mingled in their finest eveningwear, holding flutes of vintage champagne. In the center of the magnificent room stood a masterpiece of extravagant design: an enormous pyramid tower of hundreds of empty crystal glasses, dramatically taller than a child, shimmering under the vivid, elegant lighting.
Playing innocently beside the towering structure was Noah. At five years old, he was an exceptionally handsome little boy with thick chestnut curls, enormous bright-blue eyes, and rosy cheeks. Dressed in a tiny navy velvet tuxedo, a crisp white dress shirt, and a miniature bow tie, he laughed softly as he pushed a small silver toy car across the polished marble floor.
Across the room, carrying a silver tray, was Elena. She was a breathtakingly beautiful brunette with large, expressive brown eyes, delicate features, and glossy dark hair styled in an elegant bun. Wearing a crisp white shirt, a fitted black vest, and a black bow tie, she paused near the champagne tables. Her eyes naturally drifted toward Noah. She had only been working at the estate for a month, but her protective instinct over the cheerful boy was immediate and fierce.
Then, she saw it.
Behind the little boy, the towering crystal structure suddenly shuddered. One glass near the base slid out of place. A sharp clink echoed beneath the music. Another glass moved.
Elena’s eyes widened in absolute terror.
“NOAH!” she screamed, her voice cutting through the elegant hum of the party.
The entire crystal tower began tipping, its immense weight plunging directly toward the tiny boy. Elena dropped her tray and sprinted across the ballroom. Moving in what felt like suspended animation, she dove across the slick marble floor. She grabbed Noah around the waist, pulling him down and curling her own body fiercely over his small frame.
The massive glass tower collapsed around them.
Hundreds of heavy crystal glasses cascaded downward, exploding across the marble in a glittering, deafening wave. Shards flew into the air like shrapnel, bouncing off Elena’s back and shoulders as she shielded the child completely beneath her.
When the shattering finally stopped, a horrifying silence fell over the room. Noah was completely safe beneath Elena’s arms, whimpering but entirely unhurt. Elena slowly raised her head, deeply shaken. A small cut on her forehead bled slightly, and her brown eyes watered from the stinging pain of the impact.
Suddenly, the crowd parted violently. Ethan Sterling charged through the stunned guests.
At thirty-nine, Ethan was a force of nature. Extraordinarily powerful, with a tall, muscular, broad-shouldered build, thick swept-back dark hair, and piercing hazel eyes, his presence commanded the entire room. Wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, he took one look at his son underneath the maid, surrounded by shattered glass, and instantly assumed the absolute worst.
“GET OFF MY SON!” Ethan roared.
He grabbed Elena by the shoulder and pulled her roughly away from Noah. Still dazed and disoriented, Elena lost her balance and fell back onto the scattered, broken glasses.
“Ah!” Elena gasped as the sharp fragments bit into her palms.
Ethan immediately scooped Noah into his powerful arms, his strong square jaw tight with terror and rage. He checked the boy frantically for injuries.
But Noah desperately pointed a small finger toward the fallen maid. “Dad! She saved me!”
Ethan froze. The blinding rage drained from his handsome face in an instant, replaced by a profound, heavy shock and a sudden rush of guilt. He looked down at Elena, seeing the blood on her forehead and the way she cradled her cut hands.
Then, Noah pointed upward toward the balcony overlooking the floor. “That man pushed it.”
Dead silence swept through the room. Ethan slowly followed his son’s finger. He pushed his gaze through the horrified party guests until he saw him. A huge, tan-skinned security man with a shaved head, a muscular build, and a heavily tattooed neck was quietly backing away toward the rear exit.
On the floor, Elena noticed something glittering among the broken glass where the man had been standing moments before the fall. She reached down, her fingers brushing the sharp crystal. It was a heavy gold cufflink, intricately engraved with the Sterling family crest.
Elena looked up at Ethan, her breathing shallow. “He wasn't after Noah.”
She turned the cufflink over. On the back, hidden from the world, was a tiny, custom-engraved photograph of Ethan.
Ethan’s expression changed. The guilt vanished, replaced by an intensely masculine, ice-cold fury. The tattooed man saw the realization dawn on the billionaire’s face and suddenly turned to run.
Ethan gently but firmly handed Noah down to Elena, trusting her instantly. He turned toward the fleeing assassin. Before the man could reach the exit, the heavy oak ballroom doors slammed shut with a definitive crack. Two enormous bodyguards stepped out from the shadows, crossing their arms in front of the exit.
Ethan slowly removed his tailored tuxedo jacket, letting it drop to the ruined marble floor. He rolled his broad shoulder, his piercing hazel eyes locking onto his target.

“You missed,” Ethan said, his voice ice-cold.
The tattooed man slowly turned around, realizing there was no escape, and stared directly at Ethan.
