Chapter 7 - The Safe House

They drove for hours, leaving the city far behind. They arrived at a remote, off-the-grid cabin nestled deep in a dense pine forest. The safe house was Spartan but highly secure, equipped with reinforced steel doors and an independent generator.
As night fell, the adrenaline faded, leaving a heavy, exhausted silence. Elena tucked Noah into the small bed in the back room, singing softly until the traumatized little boy finally fell into a deep sleep.
When she walked out into the main living area, Ethan was sitting by the stone fireplace, pouring a glass of whiskey. He had discarded his jacket, and his white shirt was rolled up to his elbows, revealing muscular forearms lightly dusted with dark hair. He looked deeply troubled, staring into the flickering flames.
Elena sat on the leather sofa beside him. “He’s asleep.”
Ethan handed her a glass of whiskey. Their fingers brushed, and the brief contact sent a jolt of electricity up Elena’s arm.
“I never wanted this life for him,” Ethan said softly, his voice rough. “I built my company to escape the violence of my past. But it seems the past doesn't want to let me go.”
Elena took a sip, the liquid burning warmly down her throat. “Who is doing this, Ethan? Who is powerful enough to buy your head of security?”
Ethan looked down at the gold cufflink, resting it on the wooden coffee table. “My older brother, Julian. He was brilliant, ruthless, and entirely corrupt. Five years ago, he tried to orchestrate a hostile takeover of my company. When I stopped him, he fled the country. His private plane went down over the Atlantic. They never found the body.”
Elena gasped softly. “You think he survived.”
“The cufflink belonged to him,” Ethan said, turning his hazel eyes toward her. The firelight danced across his strong, masculine features. “He isn't just trying to kill me, Elena. He wants to wipe out my bloodline to claim the empire. He wants Noah dead.”
Elena felt a surge of fierce, maternal anger. “I will never let him touch that boy.”
Ethan looked at her, truly looked at her. He saw the fire in her beautiful brown eyes, the incredible bravery housed in such a delicate frame. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her jaw. His thumb traced the edge of the bandage on her forehead.
“Why are you so fiercely loyal to us?” Ethan whispered, the space between them suddenly vanishing. “You were just my maid.”

“Because Noah is pure light,” Elena breathed, her heart racing as Ethan leaned closer. “And because you... you are a good father.”
Ethan couldn't hold back anymore. The intense, magnetic pull that had been building between them finally snapped. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a deep, desperate kiss. It was a kiss fueled by survival, fear, and a burning, undeniable passion. Elena melted into his muscular embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, anchoring herself to the most powerful man she had ever known.
