Chapter 10 - The Phantom Heir

Elena didn't hesitate. She violently threw her body weight forward, snapping her head down toward her knees and dropping her entire upper body out of Julian’s line of fire.

The moment she moved, Ethan drew a concealed pistol from the small of his back with blinding speed and fired a single, perfect shot.

The bullet struck Julian precisely in the shoulder, shattering the bone and sending his pistol spinning across the floor. Julian screamed, collapsing to his knees.

Ethan sprinted across the warehouse floor. He didn't bother checking on his brother. He immediately dropped beside Elena, pulling a combat knife to slice through her zip-ties. The moment her hands were free, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest. Ethan held her fiercely, kissing the top of her head.

“Are you hurt? Did he touch you?” Ethan asked frantically, his rough hands checking her face.

“I’m fine. Ethan, Noah is at the docks! In a shipping container!” Elena cried, pointing toward the heavy bay doors.

Ethan pulled her up, his eyes burning with renewed adrenaline. He walked over to the bleeding, groaning Julian. He grabbed his brother by the collar, lifting him effortlessly off the ground.

“Which container, Julian?” Ethan growled, pressing the barrel of his pistol under Julian's chin. “Tell me, or I swear to God I will finish what the ocean started five years ago.”

Julian spat blood, a wicked, defiant grin spreading across his pale face. “You think you’ve won, Ethan? You think saving the boy ends this?”

“Which container!” Ethan roared.

“Section four. Red doors,” Julian gasped, clutching his shattered shoulder. But as Ethan dropped him, Julian began to laugh a chilling, maniacal laugh. “Go save him, Ethan. But know the truth before you do. Noah isn't your biological son.”

Ethan froze, turning back to stare at the man on the floor.

“What are you talking about?” Ethan demanded.

Julian’s smile widened, revealing bloodstained teeth. “Your wife didn't betray you, Ethan. She was loyal to the end. But she couldn't have children. When she faked the pregnancy, she bought a child from the black market to keep your empire secure. Noah is a phantom. He carries no Sterling blood. And when the board finds out, they will strip you of everything.”

Ethan stared at his brother in stunned silence. The massive secret, buried for five years, hung in the cold warehouse air.

Then, Ethan’s square jaw hardened. He looked at Elena, who was staring at him with wide, compassionate brown eyes. Ethan didn't care about bloodlines. He didn't care about boardrooms or empires. He cared about the little boy who called him Dad.

“He is my son,” Ethan said, his voice absolute and unbreakable.

Ethan left Julian bleeding on the floor for the police, grabbed Elena’s hand, and ran toward the docks. They found the red shipping container just in time. Ethan tore the heavy lock off with a crowbar, throwing the doors open.

Noah was huddled in the corner, terrified and crying. When he saw them, his enormous bright-blue eyes widened. “Dad! Elena!”

Ethan dropped to his knees, catching the boy as he ran into his arms. Elena knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them, tears of profound relief streaming down her beautiful face. They were battered, exhausted, and bleeding, but they were together.

Weeks later, Ethan stood on the grand balcony of the newly secured Sterling estate, looking out over the city skyline. Elena stood beside him, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. Inside, Noah was happily playing with his toy cars, safe and completely unaware of the storm they had weathered.

Julian was locked away in a maximum-security federal prison, but his words still echoed. There were enemies out there who now knew the secret of the Sterling heir. The empire was vulnerable, and a new war was undoubtedly brewing on the horizon.

But as Ethan wrapped his powerful arm around Elena’s waist, pulling her close and pressing a gentle kiss to her temple, he knew one thing for certain. He was no longer fighting alone. They were a family now, forged in fire and shattered glass, and Ethan Sterling would burn the entire world to ash before he let anyone touch them again.
