Chapter 13 - the will of the lioness

"You always were too sentimental, Adrien," Evelyn said, her voice refined and utterly devoid of warmth. "Just like your foolish father."
"You killed Elena," Adrien said, stepping in front of Lena, his hand slipping inside his jacket.
"Elena was weak," Evelyn scoffed, waving her manicured hand. "She fell in love with a federal prosecutor. She threatened to bring down fifty years of Viscari legitimate wealth to live a quiet life in the suburbs. I did what Antonio never had the stomach to do—I cut off the rotten branch."
Marcus stepped forward, his eyes burning with frantic malice as he aimed his gun directly at Lena. "Hand over the binder, Lena. Sign the waiver form Evelyn prepared, and I might let you live in a secluded cottage in Vermont. Refuse, and you die right here. The bank cameras are looped. The police will find Adrien Viscari dead after an internal family dispute."
Lena looked at Marcus, the man who had terrorized her for three years. For the first time, she felt no fear. Only cold, unadulterated disgust.
"You really think you won, Marcus?" Lena asked, her voice echoing clearly off the steel walls.
Marcus frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Lena held up the cassette tape from the box. "My mother knew you and Evelyn would come for this vault. She didn't leave just a will in this box. She left Evelyn's original wire instructions authorizing the car crash that killed my foster parents."
Evelyn’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second. "Kill them. Both of them. Now!"
